On a county-wide ballot Nov. 17, 1945, Howard County citizens voted to create the Howard County Junior College District and elected seven representatives to serve on the school’s first board of trustees. Now, 65 years later, Howard College officials are taking a walk down memory lane as they begin a year-long recognition of the school’s 65th birthday.
While the Thanksgiving holiday means plenty of turkey, dressing and all the other trimmings, many area residents will look to trim something slightly taller and greener — their Christmas tree.
And while it offers the opportunity for kids young and old to enjoy the change in weather and seasonal cheer, it’s not a time to forget about safety, cautions Big Spring Fire Marshall Carl Condray.
GARDEN CITY — On Monday, all the hoopla from the Garden City Bearkats' emotional playoff win against Borden County was over. Head coach Vance Jones made sure of that.
“We’re already past that. We’ve already celebrated that,” Jones said. “We’re focused on the next challenge.”
The players have apparently heard Jones’ message and should take it seriously, considering another undefeated team will be across the field at 6 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Big Spring.
Michael Angel Sarmiento, 47, of Austin died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010, in Austin. Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will be at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.
Harlan E. (Gene) Welsh passed away at 1:59 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010, in Scottsdale, Ariz., after a long illness. Services will be held at St. Anthony's Episcopal Church Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, in Scottsdale, Ariz. Interrment will be at the St. Anthony's Columbarium.
Ray Franklin White, 85, of Big Spring died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010, at his residence with his wife by his side. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Dr. Randy Cotton, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
Reginald Wayne Robertson, 60, of Weatherford, formerly of Big Spring died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010, at his residence. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park with Bishop Don Connell of Christ The King Covenant Church of Weatherford officiating.
Elizabeth E. Williamson Miller, 76, of Big Spring died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2010, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Monroe Teeters officiating. Funeral services in Seymour will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, at the First Baptist Church of Red Springs with interment to follow at the Masonic Cemetery in Seymour.
Karol Ann Smith, 74, of Big Spring died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Big Spring. Burial will be at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Alpine.
