Thousands of Big Spring residents were treated to a a mix of patriotism and holiday spirit during Saturday's 25th Annual Big Spring Herald Community Christmas Parade.
Despite blustery, cool weather, crowds lined Gregg and Scurry streets to view the more than 40 entries that constituted the lineup for this year's event.
“Things went great,” Herald Publisher Ron Midkiff said. “The entries were really top-notch. I say this every year, but I really believe this was the most successful Christmas parade yet.”
Big Spring city officials will look to move forward with a possible election in May to revise the municipality's charter — including the addition of term limits and initiatives and referendums — Tuesday, as the charter review committee meets Tuesday evening.
Brought to the Big Spring City Council by newly elected Mayor Tommy Duncan, the city staff has been asked to research the possible use of term limits, initiatives and referendums in the Crossroads area.
With so many worthwhile causes trying to make the holiday season happy for people from all walks of life, Adult Protective Services is hoping area gift-givers will look to a slightly different demographic at Christmas.
Part of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, Adult Protective Services began the "Be a Star" program this week, collecting Christmas gifts for the area's elderly and disabled.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• MAGGIE ANN-RENAYE POLLOCK, 18, of 1310 Virginia, was arrested Saturday on a warrant for criminal trespass.
• EDWARD ROSS SMITH, 52, of 3707 Airport, was arrested Saturday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
• ARLINDA ROSALES SMITH, 59, of 2002 S. Nolan, was arrested Saturday on a warrant for possession of a controlled substance.
James Melvin “J.M.” Ringener was born Feb. 7, 1926, in Wellington, Texas, to Walter J. and Lela (Smith) Ringener. He died Dec. 2, 2010, in Lawton, Okla., after a lengthy illness. He was 84. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, at Myers & Smith Funeral Home in Big Spring.
Fay Harrell, 93, of Big Spring died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, at Lynwod Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Levelland. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today (Monday) at Myers & Smith Chapel with burial at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Helen Sanchez, 83, of Big Spring died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, at her residence. Vigil services will be held at 7 tonight (Monday) at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Mount Olive Memorial Park.
