Velda Loubel Robins Dickens, 80, of Big Spring died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010, at her residence. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, at Myers & Smith Chapel with Chaplain Walter McCall of Compass Hospice officiating. Burial will be at Trinity Memorial Park.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, at the First Baptist Church in Gorman with Barry Schahn officiating. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, at Mt. Olive Memorial Park in Big Spring.

Community says 'thank you' to veterans

United States military veterans received a 300-person strong “thank you” from the community Thursday morning.

The annual Community-Wide Veteran's Day observance included patriotic music and speeches from local dignitaries. Most of all, however, attendees were urged to thank this country's veterans for their service and sacrifice.

Lubbock firm hired to manage BSISD construction projects

Big Spring Independent School District will hire a Lubbock firm to oversee several school construction projects over the course of the next couple of years.

Lee Lewis Construction of Lubbock was awarded the “construction manager at risk” contract over six other submissions by BSISD trustees during their Thursday night meeting.

The firm will supervise more than $60 million in construction projects at BSISD the next two years, including construction of three new elementary buildings and extensive renovations at two other campuses.

BSISD officials dispel rumor of gun, shooting at high school

Big Spring Independent School District officials were busily dousing rumors about a high school student bringing a gun to school this morning.

Assistant Superintendent Danny Ferrell said today any reports of that nature were categorically false.

"Any rumors about a student bringing a gun to school are false. Any rumors about a shooting at the school are false," Ferrell said. "We received an anonymous threat (Thursday) ... and extra security has been brought in to deal with that threat."

GCHS ousts Robert Lee in bi-district action

ROBERT LEE — When Robert Lee’s Foster Allen caught a 6-yard pass from Justin Gartman to give the Steers a 16-14 lead over defending state champion Garden City, the emotion and excitement was clear on their sideline.

But the composure and calmness was evident on Garden City’s sideline.
Thanks to key picks, big runs from Josh Colunga and a stout second-half defensive performance, the Bearkats fought off an early rally from Robert Lee to thump the Steers 66-20 in bi-district playoff action Thursday in Robert Lee.

Coahoma attempts to erase recent playoff woes

COAHOMA — Coahoma head coach Trey Gardner describes playoff time like some children describe their favorite holiday.

After all, he has said making it to the playoffs is like Christmas coming early for him.

But the Bulldogs are hoping the joy doesn’t end so soon when they take on Spearman in bi-district playoff action at 8 p.m. today in Plainview.
Coahoma’s last appearance in the playoffs was in 2007, but their last win was in 2003.

Defense key in Stanton-Abernathy matchup

STANTON — The playoffs were already in hand, but Stanton didn’t want to end the season with a loss at Anson. It looked like the Buffaloes were going to have to abort that plan, down 15 at halftime.

The Buffs never wavered though, scoring 36 unanswered points in the second half to win in Week 10.
