Inmate shooting reported at Flightline Unit

Officials are declining comment about a shooting that reportedly occurred at a Geo Group (formerly Cornell Corrections) prison late Tuesday morning.

According to several sources, an inmate was accidentally shot just before noon Tuesday at the Flightline Unit, one of Geo's prison units in this area.

Big Spring Emergency Medical Service units responded to the scene and the prisoner was transported to an area hospital.

The inmate's wound was not believed to be life-threatening.

It is unknown at this time what prompted the incident.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• MELANIE DAWN HENDERSON, 27, of 9509 E. Interstate Highway 20 Lot 26, was arrested Tuesday on warrants for driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction, , failure to appear, driving while license invalid, possession of drug paraphernalia and theft.
• JIM BOB WHITE, 43, of 1305 Lincoln, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.

William A. Addy Jr., 78, of Mansfield, formerly of Big Spring, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, in Mansfield. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2010, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Sammy Espinosa, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Coahoma, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

In loving memory of John L. Sullivan Jr., who passed away Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, from complications of cancer. John was born Aug. 9, 1932, in Lewiston, Idaho, to Helen E. Bissell and John L. Sullivan Sr. He grew up in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and spent his childhood there. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring.

Robert Rubio, 46, of Austin, formerly of Big Spring died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010. Services were held in Austin with a rosary service Friday, Nov. 5, 2010, and a mass of Christian burial and interment Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010.

Robert Ricky Simpson, 58, of Big Spring died Monday, Nov. 8, 2010, at his residence. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• JALEZA ANTANEZ TERRELL, 22, of Econolodge Room No. 5, was arrested Monday on a warrant for theft.
• JESUS ACOSTA TARIN, 50, of 811 Lorilla, was arrested Monday on warrants for theft and failure to appear.
• BELINDA ELLEN STRONG, 18, of 604 Baylor, was arrested Monday on a warrant for expired motor vehicle inspection certificate.
• ALBERT EDWARD AKEN, 56, of 2205 Johnson, was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.

Death of Howard County youth being probed

MANVEL — Brazoria County authorities and state child welfare officials Monday were investigating the death of a 16-year-old Howard County boy at a residential treatment center that's been under state scrutiny because of allegations of abuse.

Emergency medical technicians were summoned Friday evening to the Daystar Facility in Manvel, about 25 miles south of Houston, where CPR already had been started on the boy. He then was taken by ambulance to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, the Brazoria County Sheriff's Department said.

County to look at sick leave policy

Howard County commissioners agreed to form a committee to look into the way the county deals with employee sick leave during its Monday morning meeting, following an executive session to discuss the matter.

According to County Judge Mark Barr, the county has seen an upswing in the amount of sick leave being used by county employees this year.
