There's not much Howard College can take from its 92-26 win over the Lubbock Christian Junior Varsity team Thursday at Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.
But Howard College head coach Mark Adams is pleased with what his team can do defensively.
âThis is another good warm-up for us,â he said. âWe're getting ready to go up to Weatherford (Okla.). But our defensive effort is good. I think we have a chance to be very good defensively.â
More than 200 people â some in support of, some against and some just curious â filled the main meeting room at Dora Roberts Community Center for a public hearing on a decade-old project Thursday: a truck reliever round around Big Spring.
What they learned is that the 12.75-mile, $150 million bypass probably will be built around the west side of Big Spring someday, but it is anyoneâs guess as to how long it will take and where exactly the funding will come from.
Recent efforts by the city of Big Spring â led by newly elected Mayor Tommy Duncan â to make revisions to the city charter may have hit a major snag, as conflicts caused by a lawsuit settled in 1992 could block term limits for council members and proposed changes to initiatives and referendums.

Tuesday night was certainly a good night for Republican candidates â both incumbents and challengers â in Howard County, as GOP politicians swept the contested races countywide.
In the race for Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 Place 2, Republican incumbent Kathryn Wiseman held on to her seat with 2,819 ballots, accounting for 63.48 percent of the ballots cast. Democratic challenger Ricky Hughes garnered 36.52 percent of the vote with 1,622 ballots in the contest.
ALBANY â The Big Spring volleyball team's season is over.
The Lady Steers were in a long, hard-fought battle all night in their bi-district playoff game against Vernon, but the Lady Lions prevailed in five set 25-20, 19-25, 15-25, 30-28, 15-9.
This match had all the twists and turns one could handle. Vernon got the advantage early, especially in the first set. The Lady Lions held on to the lead the whole set, while service errors and Vernon's persistence caused problems for the Lady Steers.
Alice Barrier, 73, of Big Spring died Monday, Nov. 1, 2010, in Grand Saline. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Excuse the Big Spring volleyball team for feeling like its in uncharted territory â or at least territory the Lady Steers haven't been in for a while.
No play-in game to get into the playoffs. Check. Some much-needed rest before the playoffs. Check. No defending state champion waiting to pounce the Lady Steers in the bi-district round. Check.
All that has Big Spring feeling like it has a chance to go deep in the playoffs this season, as opposed to last year. It starts with Vernon at 6:30 p.m. today at Albany High School in Albany.
