Using just a few dollars of materials and an age-old idea, Sabrina Gonzalez designed a system that just might keep birds out of harm's way when they're passing near wind turbine farms.
Gonzalez's simple, yet elegant, solution to a problem that's been perplexing wind farm proponents was named the overall winner at the Big Spring Independent School District's annual Science Fair, held Thursday at Dora Roberts Community Center.
Howard College athletic director Britt Smith has announced the forfeit of two men's basketball games because the Hawks inadvertently played an ineligible player in the Mesa Shootout over the winter break.
The forfeits change the Hawks' overall record from 15-3 to 13-5. They are 3-1 in conference play in the western zone of Region 5.
"The player's eligibility has since been re-established and he has returned to the team. The eligibility issue was a communication error within the athletic department and the student athlete was not at fault," Smith said.
Burglaries, drug possession and driving under the influence dominated cases handed down Thursday by a Howard County grand jury.
Jurors true-billed 23 cases involving 16 individuals.
⢠Tyson Demetrious Barker, 20, currently being held at the Howard County Detention Center, possession of a prohibited weapon (third-degree felony), burglary of a habitation (second-degree felony) and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle (state jail felony).

While the last few possessions in the New Mexico Junior College game didnât go exactly as planned, the last few in Howard Collegeâs 74-71 win over No. 6 Midland Thursday earned them one of the biggest victories of the season.
COLORADO CITY — Both investigators and volunteers pushed forward today despite frigid temperatures in the search for 13-year-old Hailey Dunn, a search that has already spanned more than three weeks since the child's disappearance.
Searchers continued to comb fields and wooded areas near the Dunn home, looking for traces of the girl, including clothing and personal items.
Big Spring center Devante Lloyd applied one of the sayings from football head coach Phillip Ritchey to the Steersâ basketball season so far.
âCoach Ritchey once said âOnce you catch fire, thereâs no telling how far youâll go,ââ Lloyd said. âSo thatâs the way I see it. We have two wins in district so we caught fire. Weâre just going to keep going from there.â
How on fire are the Steers? Itâs early, but theyâre 2-0 in District 5-3A play and ranked No. 24 in the state according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coachesâ rankings.

⢠ANTHONEY THOMAS MCGRUDER, 40, of 704 W. Eighth St., was arrested Thursday on a charge of possession of marijuana â two ounces or less.
⢠ADRIAN PATRICK VALENCIA, 22, of 908 S. Nolan, was arrested Thursday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
⢠PRISCILLA LEANN TORRES, 28, of 1408 Wood St., was arrested Thursday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
The Big Spring swimming team may have something to prove at todayâs District 4-4A meet.
In a district with powerhouses such as Monahans and Pecos, the Steers are looking to make a name for themselves today at the Jerry Larned Sports Complex in Monahans.
âFor a lot of them, this is their first year,â BSHS swimming coach Mackenzie Miles said. âThey want to make a name for themselves. Whatâs most important to me is that the one who donât get to move on to regionals, that theyâre able to be most successful at this meet and get their best times.â
David Edward Clinkscales, 56, of Las Cruses, N.M., died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, in a Carlsbad, N.M., hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at the First Baptist Church in Big Spring with the Rev. Bobby Fuller officiating.
ARLINGTON â Emma Hightower, 63, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Moore Bowen Road Chapel with interment at Moore Memorial Gardens.
