BSISD officials to consider fourth new elementary campus

Big Spring Independent School District officials are looking at the possibility of adding another new elementary campus to current construction plans.

Back in May, voters authorized $63 million in construction projects, which included three new elementary campuses and extensive renovation at Moss Elementary.

Officials say, however, the the difference, cost-wise, between renovating Moss and replacing it with a new building has shrunk to the point that they may be able to justify the construction of a fourth new elementary campus.

Baby New Year arrives

He tried really hard to arrive on New Year’s Day, but just missed the mark.


Cash Wallis, son of Mary and Stephen Wallis of Big Spring, became Howard County's first baby of 2011 when he was born at 12:58 a.m. Sunday at Scenic Mountain Medical Center (SMMC).


Weighing in at a healthy 7 pounds, 8 ounces, and measuring 20 inches long, baby Cash will be welcomed home by his two big brothers, Colten and Cade.  

Festival of Lights visitor total tops 22,000

Comanche Trail Festival of Lights officials are celebrating what they called the successful conclusion of the event's 14th annual run.


More than 22,000 people from 38 states and 14 countries passed through Comanche Trail Park to view the Christmas holiday event, which ended Dec. 31.
“We didn't get the 25,000 visitors I had hoped for, but maybe next year,” said Pat Simmons, long-time festival director.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• RICKY BOB YANEZ, 25, of 1302 Sycamore, was arrested Tuesday on warrants for theft with a previous conviction, terroristic threat and harassment.
• ALEXANDRA ELIZABETH BROWN, 20, of 1306 Tucson, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant from another agency and warrants for no driver's license – when unlicensed and speeding in a school zone.
• SHAQUITA BRIZHAY SNEED, 20, of Snyder, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of no driver's license – when unlicensed.

Peggy Willis, 62 of Midland, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 1. A private family service was held on Jan. 4.

Adam Eziah Viera, 16 months, of Big Spring died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. A prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Myers & Smith Chapel with the Rev. Reynaldo Bennett officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.

Services for Burnard Marion Mayo, 92, of Ben Wheeler, formerly of Big Spring, were held at 1 p.m., Dec. 18, 2010, at First Baptist Church in Ben Wheeler with the Rev. Carlton Young officiating, under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home of Canton.

Erlinda Gonzales, 48, of Big Spring died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at Hospice House in Odessa. Vigil services will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial at Trinity Memorial Park.
