Contreras gets probated term for tot’s injuries

A Big Spring man found guilty on a charge of injury to a child during a late-September bench trial was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 10 years probation in 118th District Court Wednesday morning.

Joseph Contreras, 21, was found guilty of injury to a child during a Sept. 28 bench trial — a trial where the decision is made by the judge without the benefit of a jury — in connection with injuries sustained by a two-year-old in early December.

BSHS drama stages 'Sleepy Hollow'

Witches, goblins, gargoyles, and… headless horsemen?

In light of the Halloween season, the Big Spring High School Theatre will stage its rendition of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” beginning tonight in the high school auditorium.

The performances will be held at 7 p.m. tonight and Saturday, and at 3 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for students.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• CHANCE PATRICK NEWTON, 21, of 1309 Virginia, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant from other agency.
• ADAM MARSHALL ROBINSON, 22, of 1307 Park St., was arrested Wednesday on warrants from possession of drug paraphernalia (two counts) and nuisance/animal repeatedly at large.
• MICHELLE MAUMAU, 35, of 1900 Martin Luther King 714, was arrested Wednesday on warrants for expired registration and fail to appear.

Robert 'Bob' Hutte

Robert E. “Bob” Hutte, 93, of Big Spring, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, 2011, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Gregory Walker

Gregory Walker, 56, of Big Spring, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, in a Lubbock hospital.
The family has asked that friends join them at the funeral home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, for a time of visitation.

Greg was born on Sept. 13, 1955, in Mitchell County, Texas, and married Robin Nix on Sept. 3, 1977, in Coahoma.

Lady Steers make example of Greenwood

The Lady Steers took full advantage of a break in their district schedule to keep their skills sharp, defeating Greenwood in four games. After falling behind and losing the first game 20-25, the girls bounced back, taking the next three games 25-15, 25-18 and 25-17.

It was senior night at Steer Gym and the three graduating Lady Steers put up some impressive numbers for the hometown crowd.

Cerbi Ritchey led the team in three categories. The tall setter had 20 assists, 17 kills and 16 digs along with seven blocks and an ace.

A look at District 2-2A

District 2-2A is shaping up to go down to the wire this season with seven teams competing for three playoff spots. Right now, Idalou is sitting where they were predicted to be, undefeated (3-0) in district play. However, someone forgot to tell Coach Gardner's bunch out in Coahoma they are expected to finish in second place, not first. Currently, the Bulldogs are atop the district with a 4-0 district record after last week's thrilling 23-22 win at Forsan. Coahoma and Idalou are set to play Nov. 4 in the season finale.

Steers' final home game Friday

The 0-8 Big Spring Steers will be back in action Friday night, playing host to a well-rested Abilene Wylie football team. The Bulldogs had a bye this last week, after defeating Sweetwater 20-15 in their last game Oct. 7. Meanwhile, the Steers are coming off of a 28-6 loss in Sweetwater.

Last week offered a possible glimpse into the future of the Steers, with sophomore Devin Roberson playing almost the entire first half at quarterback.
