Enrollment growth has SWCID officials looking for dorm space

After more than 30 years, SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf is about to become a property owner.

SWCID, the nation's largest community college for the deaf and hard of hearing, has been leasing its property from the U.S. Department of Education, but that situation is about to change.

Dr. Cheryl Sparks, president of Howard College, which oversees SWCID operations, said the school is close to completing a transaction that will make the junior college district owners of most of the SWCID property.

Officials: Make safety a priority this Halloween

As ghouls and goblins of all shapes and sizes get ready to take to the neighborhoods of Big Spring and Howard County to trick-or-treat Monday, local officials are urging parents and guardians to stick to general safety guidelines to keep children safe.

According to Big Spring Fire Marshal Carl Condray, safety for trick-or-treaters begins with their costumes.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• JACOB MARTINEZ SEPULUEDA, 23, of 1701 Kentucky, was arrested Friday on a warrant for speeding.
• CALEB LEE HALLFORD, 18, of 10 Kenley Lane, was arrested Friday on a charge of possession of marijuana more than two ounces and less than or equal to four ounces.
• TONYA LEA SENTER, 34, of 4109 Parkway Rd., was arrested Friday on a warrant from other agency.
