Area residents are being asked to clean out their medicine cabinets, as the Big Spring Police Department, Drug Enforcement Administration and local department store Wal-Mart are teaming up to keep unwanted prescription drugs off the streets.
According to Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer with the BSPD, area residents will have the chance to hand over their unwanted drugs from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the local Wal-Mart, located at 201 W. FM 700.
The Big Spring City Council will meet Tuesday evening to discuss a number of items, including whether to approve a tax exemption for goods in transit.
The agenda item — which will be heard slightly more than 24 hours after Howard County commissioners are expected to vote down the same exemption — will include a public hearing on the matter, according to city officials, as well as first reading of the exemption.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• JESUS CRISTOBAL GONZALES, 39, of Stanton, was arrested Sunday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
• JOSHUA MATTHEW WILSON, 24, of 1215 Wright St., was arrested Sunday on charges of driving while intoxicated and urinating in public.
• SALOME ADOPLH RIOS, 36, of 2511 Albrook, was arrested Sunday on warrants for failure to maintain financial responsibility, failure to appear (two counts) and disobeying a flashing red signal.
• BURGLARY OF A VEHICLE was reported:
Arthur Jerry DEan, 67, of Big Spring died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011, at Trinity Memorial Park, with Sam Peak and Thomas Hayes officiating.
Benjamin Dominguez, 49, of Big Spring died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
October 22nd
Epifanio Y. Hernandez, 70, of Big Spring died Friday, October 21, 2011, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Memorial services will be at 1:00 PM Monday at Primera Iglesia Bautista.
He was born April 7, 1941, in Ballinger, Texas to Aurora and Richard Hernandez. He married Celia Mejia on July 16, 1986, in Crowell, Texas. They moved to Big Spring in 1993 from Coleman. He was a retired T. V. repairman and a member of Primera Iglesia Bautista.
Julie Christiene Smith, 43 of Wimberly and San Marcos, Texas area, formally of Big Spring died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, at University Medical Center in Austin, Texas after sustaining life threatening injuries.
She was born Feb. 25, 1968, at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, Texas to John C. and Charlotte Smith. She attended schools in Big Spring, Coahoma and San Angelo, Texas.
Julie was preceded in death by her father, John C. Smith in May of 1998.
Funeral services for Emma Lee Chapman, 86, of Sulphur Springs are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Oct.24, in Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Perry Johnson and John Odom officiating.
Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Park. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Sunday, Oct. 23, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel.
Clarance B.T. Hartfield was born April 25, 1916, to the late Lucy and Robert Hartfield in La Vernia, Texas. He departed this life on Oct. 18, 2011.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
