Howard County commissioners will once again consider an inter-local agreement with the city of Big Spring to lend fiscal support to the local state park, opting to go from a three-year renewal schedule to revisit the matter annually.
Both local governments have agreed to chip in $10,000 each â€” to be paid to the TPWD â€” to help fund the continued operation of the Big Spring State Park, which was targeted for closure by the state earlier this year.
Honor, remembrance and a debt of gratitude could be found throughout Big Spring on Friday, especially in the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.

Emma Lou Smith Douglass passed away Friday, Nov. 11, 2011. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, at St. Maryâ€™s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Barbara Kirk-Norris officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Parish Hall. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Memorial Park.
Elidia Rubio Herrera, 65, of Lakeway, Texas, formerly of Big Spring died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2001, at The Summit in Lakeway. Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish (Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church). Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.
Mattie Lee "Bobbie" McDaniel, 98, of Garden City died Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, in a local nursing home. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, at the Garden City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, at the funeral home.
She was born Dec. 4, 1912, in Golf, Texas, and married Ronnell McDaniel on Feb. 20, 1932, in Garden City, Texas. He preceded her in death on Aug. 30, 1980.
Catherine Ann Leubner and Kirby Andrew Dunn were united in marriage July 9, 2011, at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Big Spring. Brad Snellgrove, pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Plainview officiated the double ring ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of John and Ruth Leubner of Big Spring. She is the granddaughter of Oâ€™Neal Philley and the late W.H. Philley of Big Spring, and Gerhard and Rita Leubner of Rochester, NY.
