Less than 5 percent of Howard County registered voters turned out to cast their ballot in this year’s constitutional amendment election, with polls closing at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening.
Howard County saw a total of 654 ballots cast — 272 during early voting, 28 mail-in ballots and 354 cast Tuesday — accounting for just 4 percent of the registered voters, according to official election reports.
Among the proposed amendments, Proposition 1 drew the most attention in the Crossroads area, which is heavily populated by military veterans.

Emma Gene Chandler, 84, of Big Spring died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Funeral services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
Cynthia Middleton, 68, of Big Spring died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, at her residence. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
Ventura Martinez, 65, of Knott died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, at his residence. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
Martha Cargile Fielder
Martha Cargile Fielder, 87, of Big Spring died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, in an Abilene hospital. Her services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
Norman Webb Jr., 47, of San Angelo, formerly of Big Spring died Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, at his residence. Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at Mt. Olive Memorial Park in Big Spring with the Rev. Joey Bacon officiating.
Jr. was born Jan. 17, 1964, in Big Spring, Texas. He attended Big Spring schools and had lived most of his life in Big Spring. He moved to San Angelo in 2003 and was currently working for Ruiz Construction.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• BOBBY LEE AGUERO JR., 29, of 1402 Mt. Vernon, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of hindering officers discharging official duties.
• JOE ERNEST VALENCIA SR., 48, of 202 N.E. Third St., was arrested Tuesday on a charge of hindering officers discharging official duties.
• JOE ERNEST VALENCIA JR., 28, 1615 Canary, was arrested Tuesday on charges of hindering officers discharging official duties and resisting arrest, search or transportation.
