Officials open book on library idea

County and college officials are going to take a long, hard look at combining library services under one roof.

Library consolidation was the main topic of discussion during Tuesday's Howard College trustee meeting, and about the only thing that was decided was that a lot more information will be needed before a decision is made on the matter.

County Judge Mark Barr, county commissioners and County Librarian Hollis McCright joined trustees for the discussion, which College President Dr. Cheryl Sparks described as exploratory only.

Holidays prompt closings

As area residents prepare to celebrate the Christmas holiday this weekend, many area businesses and agencies are preparing to take time off from their routines to spend with their family and friends.

The city of Big Spring will close all offices, including the municipal landfill, Friday and Monday in observance of the Christmas holiday. There will be no sanitation pick-up Friday or Monday, as well. Business is expected to resume at normal hours Tuesday morning.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• MICHAEL NEAL ROBERTS, 40, of 2500 Cheyenne, was arrested Tuesday on warrants for expired registration and failure to appear.
• ADAM GARCIA, 40, of 105 N. Fifth St. in Coahoma, was arrested Wednesday on warrants for driving while license invalid, failure to maintain financial responsibility and failure to appear (two counts).
• MONICA MONIC SOLIZ, 28, of 1106 Ridgeroad, was arrested Tuesday on warrants for no driver's license – when unlicensed and failure to appear.

Gaston William (G.W.) Martin

Gaston William (G.W.) Martin, 80, of Ackerly went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 19, 2011, in Dallas, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Jim Wright and family members officiating. Interment will follow at Ackerly Cemetery in Ackerly, Texas.

Charlie Voight

December 21, 2011

Charlie Voight, 92, of Big Spring died Monday, Dec. 19, 2011, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Bill Ivins officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011, at the funeral home.

He was born June 21, 1919, in Spofford, Texas, and married Roberta Cass on Aug. 2, 1942, in Big Spring, Texas. She preceded him in death Dec. 29, 1991.

Teresa “Terry” Gonzales, 49, of Big Spring died Monday, Dec. 19, 2011, in Lubbock. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

Annie Bransom, 95, of Amarillo, formerly of Big Spring died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011, in an Amarillo hospice facility. Her services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.

Grady teams down Sands

LENORAH — The Grady Wildcats took an early lead Tuesday night and rode through four quarters to take down the Sands Mustangs in a District 8-A matchup.

The game would see players from both benches reach 20 points in the exciting run-and-gun clash, as No.7 ranked Grady’s Branson Richards lit up the scoreboard for 22 points and Sands’ Caleb Thomasson rang up 20 points.

Grady put up 16 points in the first quarter, while holding Sands to eight. By the time the two teams found the locker rooms, Grady had built a 31-20 lead.
