County likely to extend burn ban

If your Christmas or New Years celebration plans include rockets or finned fireworks, you may want to think again.
Howard County Judge Mark Barr said Friday he plans to propose an extension to the existing burn ban and a nix on finned fireworks and rockets going into the Christmas and New Year holidays during the commissioners’ Dec. 12 meeting in hopes of staving off wildfires in the coming months.
Barr said the county must have the fireworks ban in place no later than Dec. 15.

CFOT puts out call for volunteers

Donations have been collected, but they still need to be packed.
Christmas for Our Troops has wrapped up donation collections and is now seeking volunteers to help pack up items at 6 p.m. Dec. 7 at First Christian Church. Volunteers will be packing 500 boxes which will go to soldiers in Afghanistan.
This is the 11th year for the program, which is aimed at ensuring soldiers fighting for our country are not forgotten during the holiday season.

Police blotter

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7a.m. Saturday:
• RICHARD LEOS, 33, of 1207 E. 16th St., was arrested on warrants for disregard a stop sign and fail to appear.
• TIMOTHY JOSEPH MAJOR, 37, of 114 Colorado, was arrested on charges of driving while license suspended/invalid with previous conviction, accident involving damage to vehicle more than $200 and criminal mischief more than $1500 less than $20,000.
• THEFT was reported in the 1300 block of S. Gregg.
• BURGLARY OF HABITATION was reported in the 600 block of Linda.

Lady Steers top Odessa High

The Lady Steers outscored Odessa High in every quarter to take a 34-23 win in a low-scoring game at the basketball tournament in Andrews.
Cerbi Ritchey led everyone on the court with nine points and 12 rebounds, while Diamond Mayes added eight points and six rebounds. Workhorse Bridgette Tuitt (32 minutes of game time) joined in with seven points and four rebounds.
