Grand jury indicts 21

December 10, 2011

A Big Spring man and woman were indicted on charges of injury to a child and abandoning/endangering a child by a Howard County grand jury this week, charges stemming from the alleged Oct. 28 beating of a one-year-old female.
Johnny Michael Edmondson II, 21, of 300 S. Tulane (currently being held at the county jail in lieu of $25,000 bond), was indicted on charges of injury to a child (first-degree felony) and injury to a child (two counts, both third-degree felonies).

Forsan trustees eyeing ECHS program

FORSAN — This Early College High School idea seems to be catching on.
Four days after Big Spring Independent School District trustees discussed the possibility of establishing an Early College High School program, their counterparts in Forsan will do the same when they hold their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the administration wing board room.

Job corps providing hope, home to woman

Dreams do come true, just ask local resident Mary Witkowski.
Witkowski entered the Spring of Siloam Christian Women’s Job Corps this fall and has received training in various areas. According to Tina Buchanan, director of Spring of Siloam, Witkowski will be entering classes at Howard College this upcoming semester.
“This is a big project that will end up putting into the community,” Buchanan said.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• STEVEN VALENCIA GAMBOA, 28, of 506 N. Nolan, was arrested Friday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with previous conviction.
• LOUIS ANTONIO SILVA, 23, of 1210 Lindbergh, was arrested Friday on a charge of possession of controlled substance less than one gram.
• DAVID GARZA JR., 26, of 1905 Wasson Rd., was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication.

Nariah Faith Martinez, 8-year-old daughter of Israel and Toni Martinez of Big Spring, was selected as a candidate in the Distinguished Youth of Texas Scholarship and Recognition Program held Nov. 25-27 at the Marriot Rivercenter Hotel in San Antonio. During the weekend competition, Nariah won the title of second runner up to the Little Miss of Texas titleholder which also included an academic savings bond.

Turf's up! BSISD to install new field at Memorial Stadium

Memorial Stadium is getting a major facelift.

During their Thursday night meeting, Big Spring Independent School District trustees voted to set aside $825,000 in reserve funds to purchase and install artificial turf for the stadium.

But a new playing field is only the first of several upgrades planned for the 60-year-old stadium. In the near future, school district officials plan to replace the stadium's restrooms and concession stands and significantly upgrade its field house and press boxes.

Robbery suspect arrested

A Big Spring woman, arrested and charged with the Tuesday morning aggravated robbery of a 7-Eleven, is still in custody and has been charged with other crimes, according to Big Spring police.

As of this morning, Deborah Kay Cantu, 46, of 419 Dallas Apt. B, remained in the custody of the Howard County Detention Center. Bond has been set at $75,000 for the aggravated robbery and $2,000 each for two counts of burglary of a vehicle.
