'Shear' support: Students lose their locks for teacher fighting cancer

Worrying about what others would think was the last thing on the minds of 11 Coahoma elementary students.

What started as an idea of one fourth grader, Jaxon Muller, turned into a group of kids showing their support for Coahoma elementary physical education coach Deana Clark. Clark was diagnosed with breast cancer and has started rounds of chemotherapy. Due to the treatments she has lost her hair.

County, city joint meeting Monday

Howard County commissioners and members of the Big Spring City Council will hold a joint meeting Monday to discuss possible plans to house the sheriff's office and police department at the newly-built County Jail, a move officials from both sides say could help streamline both law enforcement agencies.

Commissioners face routine agenda

Howard County commissioners will meet Monday at 3 p.m. to handle a number of routine agenda items, including presentation of a comprehensive financial report for 2010.

Don Stephens, CPA, is expected to present the annual financial report at the meeting, which is being held a little more than two hours prior to a joint meeting between commissioners and officials with the Big Spring City Council.

Drug cases highlight grand jury session

Several Crossroads residents arrested on felony narcotic warrants in January were indicted by a Howard County grand jury Thursday, part of a six-month investigation into the traffic of drugs in the Big Spring area.

Among those indicted as part of the Jan. 26 bust were:

• Bonnie Sue Birmelin, 50, currently being held at the county jail, delivery of a controlled substance (second-degree felony) and Possession of a controlled substance (state jail felony).

College eyes budget battle

The news might not be getting any better, but at least the picture is getting clearer.

Howard College's financial options for the coming fiscal year don't necessarily look better than they did a few weeks ago, but at lest officials have a better idea of where things stand.

Those options will be discussed with college trustees when they hold their monthly meeting at 12:320 p.m. Monday in the Student Union Building's Tumbleweed Room.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
•JASON EARNEST KEY, 28, of 602 George Street, was arrested Friday on a warrant for dog or cat running at large.
• OSWALDA MARTINEZ, 57, of 2501 Kelly Circle, was arrested Friday on a charge of assault – family violence causing bodily injury.
• JESSE JAMES COLLINS, 23, of 405 N. Scurry, was arrested Friday on charges of assault of a public servant, public intoxication, disorderly conduct/language.
• BURGLARY OF HABITATION was reported in the 200 block of Circle Drive.

Robert Lawrence Adkins, 60, of Big Spring, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, at his home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Chapel with the Rev. Keith Weaver officiating. Burial will follow at Trinity Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

Raford L. Dunagan

Raford L. Dunagan, 79, of Big Spring, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, 2011 at East Fourth Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Weaver, pastor, and the Rev. Walter McCall, chaplain with Compass Hospice, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

Kennedale ends Steers’ playoff run

BRECKENRIDGE — The Big Spring Steers were hanging on by a thread for most of Friday’s Class 3A area championship game against No. 4 Kennedale.

The Wildcats couldn’t exactly put the Steers away early and the Steers couldn’t seriously make a game out of it.

But like elite teams do, Kennedale wore down Big Spring on the way to a 74-43 win, ending the Steers’ season.
