Officials with the Settles Hotel Development Company say they have a tight schedule ahead of them, but still expect to have the renovation of the historic Settles Hotel completed by the end of 2011.
Kris Ryan, SHDC manager, said the project has faced some hurdles recently — including freezing weather — but is making a great deal of progress.
West Texas Centers and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 3188 raised $10,680 during Ninth Annual Children-In-Need Chili Cook-off Jan. 29 at the Eagles Lodge.
Close to 40 cooks participated in the cook-off, which awarded prizes to the top 10 entrants.
The chili cook-off has grown in popularity as evidenced by the number of participants and visitors who pay to sample the chili, said Landon Sturdivant, West Texas Centers Chief Operating Officer.

Allan T. Hopper, 86, of Stanton died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011, at his residence. Graveside funeral services with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2011, at the Blocker Chapel at Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Porterfield officiating.
Cariker Roy â€śC. Royâ€ť Wright, 69, of Rogers, Ark. died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Rogers. He was born April 7, 1941 in Olney to Lee Roy Wright and Helen Bennett Wright.
William Lane "Sunny" Edwards of Big Spring passed away Monday, Jan. 31, 2011. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park with the Rev. Craig Holstedt officiating.
Herman Rosemond Sr., 70, of Big Spring died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at West Highway 80 Church of Christ with Ulis Johnson and Ulysses Mathews officiating.
FORT WORTH â€” John Lewis Stripling, 94, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, at Ridglea United Methodist Church with interment to follow in Greenwood Memorial Park.
COAHOMA â€” The third quarter was like hemlock to the Coahoma Bulldogs and Bulldogettes Wednesday.
Both squads had encouraging efforts in the first halves of their respective games against Slaton Wednesday, but once the second half started, all the good vibes vanished as if through a hole in the roof of the Coahoma Elementary Gym.
The end result was a 68-51 win for Slaton in the boysâ€™ game and a 63-33 decision in the girlsâ€™ game.

LENORAH â€” The No. 10 Grady Wildcats easily took care of Dawson in District 8A, Division II action Wednesday. Shane Teague and Bransen Richards were big with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Dawson fell to 0-12 in district play.
