Air Force Airman Guillermo W. Alcantar

April 23, 2011

Air Force Airman Guillermo W. Alcantar graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
He is the son of Maria Alcantar of Westover Road. Alcantar graduated in 2009 from Big Spring High School.

Daniel Lee Aguilar

Rachel and Gabriel Aguilar Sr. of Big Spring announce the birth of their son, Daniel Lee Aguilar. Daniel was born April 12, 2011, at 11:19 p.m. weighing 5 pounds 10 ounces and measuring 19 ¾ inches. His maternal grandparents are Lorenzo and Mary Juarez. His paternal grandparents are Raul and Amelia Aguilar. He was welcomed home by his sister, Gabriella, and his brother, Gabriel Jr.

Howard College expected to raise tuition, fees

Howard College trustees will vote on recommended tuition and fee increases when they hold their monthly meeting at 12:30 p.m. Monday in the Student Union Building's Tumbleweed Room.

College President Dr. Cheryl Sparks said a likely loss of more than $1 million in current state funding has prompted officials to recommend the rate hikes.

Under the proposed state budget recently approved by the Texas House of Representatives, the local college district would lose $1.6 million in current state funding. That loss would come on top of cuts already mandated by the legislature, Sparks said.

Beach Boys coming to Garrett Coliseum

The Big Spring Symphony Orchestra, in conjunction with Jeans ‘n Classics of Toronto, Canada, will present the music of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys in concert April 30 in the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.

“We’re fortunate to have such a gifted group of musicians come to Big Spring and play the music of Endless Summer,” said Dr. Keith Graumann, symphony conductor.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday:
• JOSE NICANOR GARFIAS III, 34, of 1204 S. Lancaster, was arrested Friday on charges of criminal mischief and public intoxication.
• JULIE LACHELLE LAWSON, 27, of 2911 W. Highway 80 Apt. 248, was arrested Friday on warrants for failure to appear (nine counts), rodent control and accumulated items/weeds/rubbish (two counts).
• RICHIE KARL ROMINE, 22, of 510 Donley, was arrested Friday on two warrants from another agency.
