Surf's up: Symphony to present Beach Boys' music

The surf will be up Saturday night at Dorothy Garrett Coliseum as the Big Spring Symphony, together with Jeans 'n Classics of Toronto, Canada, presents the music of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys.

"It should be a really good, clean, family kind of upbeat show,” said Dr. Keith Graumann, symphony conductor and director. “We'll have tables on the floor for anyone who would like table seating.”

Dee's Trade Show opens two-day run Saturday

For those in need of some retail therapy, this weekend is perfect timing.

Dee’s Trade Show will be at the Howard County Fair Barn Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This marks the fifth year for the show, according to Denise McComb, owner.

“Mother’s Day is right around the corner and there are numerous gifts to be found,” McComb said. “There are lots of unique arts and crafts this year.”

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• STEVEN RAY EVANS, 22, of 1103 E. Sixth St., was arrested Thursday on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and burglary of a habitation.
• JOE LYNN PAYNE, 40, of Odessa, was arrested Thursday on charges of resisting arrest, search or transportation and public intoxication.
• REBECCA NICOLE RODRIQUEZ, 24, of 300 Furrh in Coahoma, was arrested Thursday on two warrants from another agency.

Foster families thanked

Fostering is about family and creating a special bond.

A World for Children, a foundation aimed at finding “forever families” for children referred through Child Protective Services, held an appreciation luncheon for its foster families Thursday at St. Mary's Episcopal Church.

“Without foster families we wouldn't be an agency,” said Isaac Miramontes, foster home developer. “We truly appreciate what these families do for us.”

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the the Rev. Gene Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.

Lady Steers sending quality, quantity to regional track meet

Big Spring High School girls' track coach Nick Roberson believes a window of opportunity is opening for his team.

The Lady Steers will send 10 athletes to the Region I-3A track meet, which starts Monday in Lubbock, and Roberson believes that large number is but a harbinger of things to come for the program.

Seniors Desiree Anderson and Chanvel Cuviello, juniors April Turner, Cerbi Ritchey and Bridgette Tuitt, sophomores Bianca Ryle and Jaycee Williams and freshmen Morgan Seaton, Donisha McGree and Dyrshae Vandervilt will represent BSHS at the regional meet.
