As contractors reach the final phases of Howard College's $21 million campus renovation, officials are taking pride in the fact they were able to deliver on every project they envisioned.

In fact, they've done even more than originally planned.

County OKs murder case 'insurance'

Howard County commissioners approved a contract with Lubbock County Monday morning that would serve as a type of “insurance policy.”

The annual contract — which costs the county approximately $14,000 — secures Howard County a regional public defender necessary to try a capital murder case.

According to County Judge Mark Barr, the county has participated in the program during the past three years, and while $14,000 certainly isn't loose change, it's a pittance compared to what a capital murder case could cost the county.

Mt. Olive designated as historical cemetery

Howard County drivers passing by Mt. Olive Cemetery on Texas Highway 350 may not have noticed the latest addition to the stone entrance gate, but the metal medallion mounted on the left side is the third step in the historic preservation of the cemetery.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• CHRISTINA LEANN GARZA, 27, of 1902 Mittel, was arrested Monday on charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
• RICHARD HERNANDEZ MARTINEZ, 46, of 805 E. 15th St., was arrested Monday on charges of assault – family violence and criminal mischief.
• JIMMY ENRIQUE ALATORRE, 20, of 1002 N. Main St. Apt. 66, was arrested Monday on a charge of injury to a child – serious bodily injury.
• THEFT was reported in the 1300 block of E. 11th Place.

Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Msgr. Bernard L. Gully officiating. Burial will be at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
