You try to win it all again, of course.

One year after winning gold at the Texas state high school track meet, Big Spring High School senior Mike Menefield will try to duplicate the feat when he competes in the Class 3A triple jump and long jump at the state track meet Friday in Austin.

Helsley named teacher of the year

Washington Elementary School fourth grade teacher Beccie Helsley was honored with the MiraBeau B. Lamar Outstanding Teacher Recognition Award Thursday afternoon.

Helsley has been a teacher for the past 39 years. She has taught 33 years for the Big Spring Independent School District and 29 of those years at Washington Elementary.

The teacher of the year award is awarded each year to one teacher from the district and is decided by a nomination. This is the first year that a teacher at Washington Elementary has received this award.

Letter carriers food drive is Saturday

Area post offices and the West Texas Food Bank are joining together to collect food, in order to help those in need.

Saturday, mail carriers will pick up bags of food placed by mailboxes, as part of the National Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive put on by the National Association of Letter Carriers.

“This is our largest food drive of the year,” Earl Graham,food bank resource coordinator, said. “Our largest collection of food comes from the post office than any other source.”

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• GARY JOSEPH LIMONES, 30, of Odessa, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
• CLINTON AARON MUSE JR., 60, of 700 Ohio, was arrested Wednesday on charges of possession of a controlled substance, expired driver's license and failure to appear.
• DONALD GREY MCCOMMONS, 71, of 1404 Lexington, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.

Hawk send off set Monday

A Hawk Send Off will be held at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the women’s residence hall on the Big Spring campus for the Region V Champion Hawk softball team.
After sweeping the Region V regional tournament, the Hawks softball team has earned a trip to the NJCAA Division I softball national tournament in St. George, Utah.

All Hawk softball fans are invited to come to the send off and show their Hawk spirit.

Tournament play will begin May 19 and carry through May 21. All of the latest updates and information on the Hawks will be available at www.hchawk.com.

Forsan set to take on Bushland

Forsan High School, fresh off a bi-district title, will take on a tough Bushland squad at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lubbock Cooper.

The best-of-three area playoff will continue with a second game at noon Friday at the same location, followed by a third game — if necessary — 30 minutes after Game 2.

“They went to the state tournament last year, so they are a solid team all-around,” Forsan Coach Jason Phillips said this morning. “They hit the ball really well. We are going to have to play one of our best games and I think if we do that, we have a good chance to win.”

Hawks fight back in tourney with extra-innings wins

LUBBOCK — A day after suffering their first loss in the Region V Baseball Tournament, Howard College's Hawks clawed their way back into contention.

In a day- and night-long affair at Dan Law Field here Tuesday, the Hawks first defeated Midland College 14-13 in 13 innings, then rallied in a late evening game to upend Weatherford College 6-1 in 15 innings.
With those victories, Howard has the opportunity at some revenge. At 1 p.m. today the Hawks were to take on New Mexico Junior College — the team that beat them 5-1 on Monday.

Kenneth Barton Howell came into this world Jan. 17, 1935, and left May 9, 2011, after 76 years of changing the world. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 12, 2011, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Lindsey, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.

Aquatic center fees, schedule get nod from council

The Big Spring City Council approved first reading of an ordinance amending codes related to the municipal aquatic center — and setting admission and usage fees — Tuesday night on a 6-1 vote, as the facility is expected to open in approximately a month.

The amendments would rename the code from “Comanche Trail Park Municipal Swimming Pool” to “Big Spring Family Aquatic Center,” as well as establish fees for entrance, pavilion rental and other transactions involving the facility.
