Big Spring doing well in early going of state meet

Big Spring High School’s Bridgette Tuitt and Desiree Anderson placed 1-2 in the Class 3A long jump Friday at the University Interscholastic League State Track Meet.
Classmate Mike Menefield took second in the long jump and third in the triple jump.
A more detailed report will be upcoming in the Herald. The state meet was to conclude Saturday.

Lady Buffs defeated by Alpine’s Bucks, 14-1

ODESSA — Forsan’s Lady Buffs ran into a buzzsaw here Friday and fell to Alpine 14-1 in Game 1 of its quarterfilal playoff series.
Game 2 of the best-of-three series was scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at the same location. Game 3, if necessary, was to follow 30 minutes after the completion of Game 2.
The series was being played at Odessa High School Field near Ratliff Stadium.

Forsan boys exit playoffs

LUBBOCK — Coach Jason Phillips was disappointed his Buffaloes weren’t moving on the playoffs after Friday’s 6-2 loss to Bushland but he certainly wasn’t disappointed in his players.
“We played two solid games against last year’s state finalist. Bushland is a great 2A baseball team and our guys went out and proved that we could play with them,” Coach Phillips said. “It’s disappointing to lose, but we had a great year. I’m proud of our guys.”

Local scouts to recruit, fight hunger

It’s time for the 2011 Boy Scouts of America Spring Information Night.
Representatives from the Boy Scouts will be on hand from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at 610 Scurry Street to provide information about the different programs the Boy Scouts of America offer.
Throughout the evening information will be provided from volunteers of the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, aviation exploring, fire service exploring and venturing.

BSHS Senior wins national award for ‘Dreams’ painting

It’s all about never forgetting our dreams, at least that’s what Sara Goza portrays in her award winning painting, “Dreams.”
“Our dreams are something that everyone needs to keep in mind,” Goza said. “Even though we may look back on them and think they are silly, at one time they were important.”
Goza, a senior at Big Spring High School, entered her piece, along with three other Big Spring students to the 2011 Congressional Art Competition for Texas District 19.

Herald to file on candidates

Information pertaining to alleged illegal campaign contributions accepted by a pair of candidates vying for seats on the Big Spring City Council this weekend was turned over Friday to local law enforcement on the advice of legal officials with the Texas Press Association.
According to campaign finance reports filed with City Hall, Marcus Fernandez, candidate for District 1 in Saturday’s city elections, and James Glen Carrigan, who is running for the District 3 seat, both accepted contributions from two corporations, Quad A Inc. and Hydro Dynamics.

Former Big Spring resident has book published

Former Big Spring resident Mark J. Silen has had his book “The Perfect Time, the Universal Calendar” published. The book details a simple method of marking time. The system consists of 52 weeks, times 7 days equals 364 days. Silen is a resident of San Angelo. His book is available online and at most major bookstores.

Ira Elmo “Ike” Wasson, 67, of Big Spring died Thursday, May 12, 2011, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Joe Hernandez officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Glennie V. Cain, 89, of Stanton died Wednesday, May 11, 2011, in Midland. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2011, at the First Baptist Church in Stanton with the Rev. David Harp officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, May 13, 2011, at the funeral home.
