Silver Heels fire extinguished

A wildfire reported Sunday morning in the Silver Heels area torched an estimated 35 acres and destroyed a shed before firefighters were able to douse the flames, according to Howard County Volunteer Fire Department officials.
The fire was reported in the area between Driver Road and Chaparral Road at approximately 10:30 a.m., according to HCVFD Chief Tommy Sullivan.

Plan to visit the stars Saturday

Amateur astronomers and local residents will get a chance to turn their sights toward the heavens Saturday as officials with the Big Spring State Park prepare for their annual Stargazing Party atop the local landmark.
“Sunset is approximately 9 p.m. and there will be a program as soon as it gets dark enough to see the projection, which is usually between 9:20 and 9:30 p.m.,” said Park Manager Ron Alton. “I'm going to ask the astronomy club members to bone up on their constellations so we can point some of them out.”

Lakeview Reunion

Family Aquatic Center opens

Children and adults were able to enjoy the splash area in the new Big Spring Family Aquatic Center during the facility's grand opening Saturday afternoon. The new aquatic center includes a splash area, leisure pool, two slides and a lazy river. Admission is $5 a person. The center is open from noon until 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
