County clinic to open July 5

Howard County residents will soon be able to take advantage of another provider of accessible primary health care.

The Howard County Health Center is set to open July 5. This will be the third location South Plains Rural Health Services, Inc. has opened since its inception in 1986. Other locations include Levelland and Lamesa.

Once fully operational the Big Spring location will offer medical, dental and pharmacy services.

Volunteers needed to help with film society screening

As the Big Spring Film Society gears up for its July 1 screening of the 1985 classic “Back to the Future” — the opening of the group's summer screening series — the organization is still in need of volunteers to help with this year's scheduled events.

The local organization is looking for volunteers to help plan and execute the screening, which will kick off the society's 2011 season, according to Big Spring Film Society spokesman and coordinator Brandon Johnson.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• ROBERTO VASQUEZ II, 19, of 3610 Hamilton St., was arrested Friday on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
• KEVIN SHEA BOYCE, 32, of 2902 E. Cherokee St., was arrested Friday on charges of tampering/fabricating physical evidence; possession of marijuana less than or equal to two ounces.
• SIMON ARENIVAZ, 20, of 2603 Ent Dr., was arrested Friday on a charge of consumption of alcohol by a minor.

Inez Garza, 81, of Big Spring, died Friday, June 17, 2011 at Scenic Mountain Medical Center.  Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

ARLINGTON — Norma Flo Cudd of Arlington passed from this life and went home to her heavenly Father, Friday, June 10, 2011, at the age of 73. Graveside service: 1 p.m. Saturday, June 25, 2011, in Bomar Point Cemetery in Wilson, Okla. A reception will follow at the Wilson Church Of Christ.

78th annual rodeo begins tonight

For decades, rodeo has been home to some of the funniest acts in the world of entertainment.

For the last few years, none has been better than Keith Isley, and he’s got the hardware to prove it. Each of the last two ProRodeo seasons, Isley has earned the coveted Triple Crown by sweeping the awards in all the categories for which he is recognized – Clown of the Year, Coors Man in the Can and Comedy Act of the Year.

City, county mull new district lines

Officials with Howard County and the city of Big Spring began the arduous task of redrawing precinct and district boundaries Wednesday, a process made necessary by the shifts in population identified in the 2010 Census.

Howard County commissioners met with Robert T. Bass — an attorney with Allison, Bass and Associates LLP — during a special-called meeting Wednesday morning to discuss the process by which the political lines must be drawn according to federal law.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• DAVID ORTIZ, 41, of 105 N.E. 10th St., was arrested Wednesday on a charge of public intoxication.
• IDA JOYCE JONES, 44, of 5907 N. Service Rd. Apt. 18, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid – no insurance.
• MARTIN ALVARADO, 30, of 1603 Cardinal, was arrested Wednesday on warrants for driving while license invalid (two counts), failure to appear and no driver's license – when unlicensed.

Sandy Daves, 28, of Sand Springs died as a result of an accident while working on an oil rig Saturday. He passed away in Lubbock at UMC Hospital on June 11, 2011. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 17, 2011, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Charles Harrington, pastor of First Church of God, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

Brent David Wood, 24, died Tuesday morning, June 14, 2011, at his residence. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 17, 2011, at First Baptist Church in Big Spring with the Rev. Raye Nell Dyer of Nashville, Tenn., officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.
