Industry on stage in Chamber program

Industry takes center stage Aug. 10 as the Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce gets ready to present the third program in its State of the Community series in the Howard College Cactus Room.

Representatives from Alon USA, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the GEO Group Inc. and WETT — Wind Energy Transmission Texas — will be part of the program. Also scheduled is a presentation on Scenic Mountain Medical Center, which was originally scheduled for Part 2 of the series, but was delayed because of a scheduling conflict.

Salvation Army preparing for back-to-school drive

The Salvation Army is kicking off its Back to School Drive.

The program is aimed at providing local, low-income school age children and their families with essential supplies as the school year approaches. “

We are looking to the generosity of the community to be able to help with this year's program,” Maj. Orville Chambless said.

According to Chambless, the program is set to help an estimated 400 students, depending on the donations received.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• JAMES WILLIAM HALE JR., 58, of 1809 Mittel, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of assault of a public servant.
• CRIMINAL MISCHIEF was reported in the 2600 block of Chanute.
• BURGLARY OF A HABITATION was reported in the 3000 block of Navajo.

The Howard County Sheriff’s Office reported the following activity:
Note — Officials with the Howard County Jail reported having 71 inmates at the time of this report.

Bobette "Bobbie" Pierce, 72, of Big Spring died Tuesday, July 19, 2011, in a local hospital. Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 22, 2011, at Dora Roberts Community Center.

M.W. Bates

July 21, 2011

M.W. Bates, 89, of Big Spring died Sunday, July 10, 2011, at his residence. Private services with military honors were held Sunday, July 17, 2011, at Myers & Smith Chapel.

Lilia 'Lily' Howard

July 21, 2011

Lilia “Lily” Howard, 81, of Big Spring died Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 22, 2011, at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

Roy Keefer, 85, of Big Spring died Wednesday, July 20, 2011, in a Midland hospital. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
