The Lady Steers got their season off to a good start last night, defeating Abilene High School in four matches. Scores of 25-14, 25-22, 21-25 and 25-22 allowed the team to avenge last seasonâ€™s loss at the hands of the Lady Eagles.
The Steers got off to a fast start in the match, taking it first-round win easily 25-14, but Abilene seemed to get stronger as the game progressed and made things a bit more competitive. as the Lady Steersâ€™ opening night went along.
A Big Spring man was arrested Tuesday and charged with cruelty to livestock animals in connection with the July 13 seizure of several horses suffering from malnourishment.
Joel Venegas Estrella, 51, was booked into the Howard County jail on a charge of cruelty to livestock animals just before midnight, following an investigation by the Howard County Sheriff's Office, according to Sheriff Stan Parker.
"He was taken into custody without incident,” Parker said.
Big Spring school trustees are expected to put their formal stamp of approval on the district's single-member redistricting plan when they hold their monthly meeting at 5:15 p.m. Thursday in the high school board room.
Redrawing the seven single-member trustee districts to adequately reflect population and demographic changes in the last 10 years has been a months-long process, involving lawyers, demographers and an advisory committee comprised of both school officials and local citizens.

â€˘ JIMMY FRANCIS GARRARD, 37, of 303 S.E. Ninth St., was arrested Tuesday on a warrant for assault â€“ family violence.
â€˘ DENA GAYE COKER, 54, of 1403 S. Nolan, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of public intoxication.
â€˘ ISAAC DANIEL CHAVARRIA, 25, of 1504 Nolan, was arrested Tuesday on charges of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction and failure to maintain financial responsibility.
A memorial service for Charletta Parchman, formerly of Big Spring, will be held Saturday, Aug. 13 at 1:30 p.m. at Birdwell Lane Church of Christ.
Elsie Nobles, 90, of Big Spring, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, at Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
