City tax rate goes down

The city of Big Spring took a step forward Tuesday night in solidifying its proposed 2011-2012 budget and ad valorem tax rate, calling for a public hearing on the matter to be held during its next council meeting.

The proposed budget is based on a 94.95-cent per $100 valuation tax rate, a drop of 5 cents compared to last year's 99.95 cent rate. The proposed rate is also nearly 5 cents below the effective tax rate of 99.7 cents per $100 valuation.

Jury acquits man on aggravated assault charge

A 118th Judicial District Court jury Tuesday acquitted a Big Spring man of assaulting a woman with his automobile.

The jury deliberated about 30 minutes before finding Joseph Alton Murley not guilty of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon at the end of the one-day trial.

Murley was accused of deliberately hitting a woman with his car in the 1300 block of Stanford on July 1, 2010. If convicted, he would have faced a prison term of between two and 20 years in state prison.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• LOGAN EARL ROSE, 29, of 1100 Nolan, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant for disorderly conduct – fighting.
• ORLANDO SANCHEZ JR., 54, of 1407 Virginia, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid – no insurance.
• JOHNNY LEE RIOS, 26, of 710 Creighton, was arrested Tuesday on charges of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction and theft.

John W. Ray, 84, of Big Spring died Monday, Aug. 22, 2011, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Chapel with the Rev. Pat Ray officiating.
