Alon makes payments to plaintiffs

Howard County Sheriff Stan Parker confirmed Friday damages awarded to three Crossroads residents as a result of the 2008 explosion at the Big Spring Refinery have been paid after a writ of execution was issued in the lawsuit.

Plaintiffs Beverly Smithie and Ron and Debra Walker were awarded more than $350,000 for property repair and medical expenses in 118th District Court in December after a jury found Alon USA — owner of the refinery — guilty of negligence in the accident that shook the Big Spring area Feb. 18, 2008.

Lady Liberty to get a facelift

Repairs are finally beginning on Lady Liberty and before long she will be back where she belongs — in front of the Municipal Auditorium.

After a few chance circumstances, Terry Kessler, owner of Hester's Mechanical Contractors Inc., decided to not only take a look, but agreed to help repair the Statue of Liberty replica that was toppled from its perch in front of the auditorium earlier this year.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• DON LLOYD BROOKS, 45, of 1304 Wood, was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication.
• NOLAN-CASEY RAYMOND-LU MOORE, 22, of 600 Avondale, was arrested Friday on charges of possession of marijuana less than or equal to two ounces and disorderly conduct/noise.
• AMBER RENEE RAMIREZ, 27, of 611 N. San Antonio, was arrested Friday on charges of driving while license invalid and failure to appear.

Alice Ann Crown

Alice Ann Crown of Denton, Texas, formerly of Big Spring, Texas, passed away Aug. 21, 2011, in a Denton hospital.
A memorial service was held Aug. 24, 2011, in Denton.
She was born in Ludlow, Vt., on Dec. 13, 1943, to Phyllis Marie Waite and Albert Bulley. She worked for Coffee & Coffee Attorneys at Law while she lived in Big Spring. She married Kenneth Crown on March 24, 1992, in Sterling City. He preceded her in death Jan. 16, 2010.

Isidora ‘Lola’ Salgado

Funeral services for Isidora “Lola†Salgado have been set for 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church with Msgr. Tim Schwertner officiating and Deacon Clemente Villa assisting. Interment will follow at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Isidora, age 89, passed away in Stanton. She was born in San Antonio del Bravo, Chihuahua, Mexico, on April 4, 1922. Her parents were Felix Martinez and Lyz Prieto.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose Salgado; a son, Abelado Salgado; and her parents, Felix and Lyz Martinez.
