August 8th
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 8 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• KRISTINA FELICIDAD HEALY, 21, of 1900 Martin Luther King Blvd. 512, was arrested Saturday on a charge of public intoxication.
• TONY MOJICA CASTELLANO, 37, of 1503 S. Scurry, was arrested Saturday on a charge of driving while intoxicated/second offense.
• JOSHUA WILLIAM LUCERO, 23, of 2104 Johnson, was arrested Saturday on a charge of driving while intoxicated – open container.
An Alon USA employee suffered minor burns late Friday night after a gas compressor exploded, according to officials at the Big Spring Refinery.
Vice President of Refining Jim Crosby told local media outlets during the weekend the fire started at the refinery’s hydrocracking unit at approximately 11:50 p.m. Friday.
Crosby said the fire took approximately 40 minutes to extinguish. One employee was burned in the altercation and received first-aid treatment on the scene. The employee was not transported to a hospital, however.
The Big Spring City Council will meet Tuesday evening — prior to continued budget work sessions — to discuss a number of issues, including final reading of a denial of a proposed rate increase from Atmos Energy’s West Texas Division.
The Council voted unanimously July 26 to deny the proposed rate increase from natural gas provider Atmos Energy, saying not only is the rate hike unwarranted, a rate decrease is in order.
It’s not just taking the oath, but living up to it that makes a difference.
This is the second year for the Good Scout Award Dinner, scheduled for Thursday and this year the winner of the award is doubley special. This year, two people are being honored with this award — John and Cynthia Scott — not just one. Hayes Stripling was the recipient at the 2010 Good Scout Award Dinner.
Sometimes cleaning out the closest can be a good thing.
Crossroads residents joined together Saturday morning — July 30 — at the Community Wide Yard Sale held in the Big Spring Herald parking lot in support of the Howard County Volunteer Fire Department. Eleven vendors set up in the north parking lot from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. Through their efforts, $714 was raised.
There were garage sale items, arts and crafts and more. Members of the volunteer fire department were also on hand during the event.
August 6th
The Big Spring City Council will begin holding its annual budget work sessions — which were originally slated for last week and postponed — Monday evening as the municipality tries to get a handle on its fiscal plan for 2011-2012.
And while budget sessions have traditionally been a time for council members to pitch their pet projects for the coming year, a lack of revenue — due in large part to the ongoing drought and lack of water sales — will most likely keep such plans on the back burner going into the next fiscal year.
An important piece of Big Spring history is sitting in a warehouse while it waits for repair. The question city officials are asking is when the repairs will come.
The Statue of Liberty replica that once stood in front of the Municipal Auditorium was damaged by a wind storm this past spring and was removed from its post until repairs could be made.
Howard County commissioners will meet Monday morning to discuss a number of topics, including approval of the 2011-2012 budget for the county's 911 emergency district and an update of ongoing work with the Lubbock Dispute Resolution Office.
Commissioners are expected to meet with Crystal Collins and Gene Valentini from the Lubbock-based dispute resolutions group, a program the county has been involved with for some time now.
The court is also expected to meet with Howard County 911 Director Tommy Sullivan regarding his agency's proposed 2011-2012 budget.
Lynda Sliger, 72, of Big Spring, died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, in a Midland hospital. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Jim Sliger officiating.
Dennis F. Sullivan, 63, of Big Spring, died Saturday, July 30, 2011 at his residence. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene.
