Downtown Big Spring Heart of the City Park will turn into a fiesta Friday night and Saturday. ALSA, a local community club, is bringing live music, food vendors and other vendors together for a community celebration of diez y seis de Septembre (Sept. 16) —Mexican independence day.
“This is just one more way we can serve the community and provide a community and family oriented event,” said Jaime De los Santos, ALSA vice president.

Current and former Forsan High School students are expected to gather this weekend when the school holds its annual homecoming activities.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• RONALD PHILLIP CASILLAS III, 36, of 2706 S. Monticello, was arrested Wednesday on charges of possession of a controlled substance and use or possession of illegal smoking material.
• JAMES ODELL PERRY, 45, of 538 Westover Rd. Apt. 249, was arrested Wednesday on warrants for possession of a controlled substance, use or possession of illegal smoking material and a warrant from another agency.
Marcia Ruggles, 88, of Big Spring went to her eternal home in Heaven to sit at the foot of Jesus on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Dr. Randy Cotton, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, officiating.
Verlene Atkinson, 78, of Big Spring died Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Robert Turner officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.
This week, the Big Spring Steers will make the trip west to face the Monahans Loboes. Coach Phillip Ritchey's scrappy bunch will be looking for their first win of the year against a historically strong squad.
