Officials are one step closer in their quest to rename the local VA medical center after Big Spring's only Medal of Honor recipient.
U.S. Rep. Randy Neugebauer (R-Lubbock), announced Wednesday that his provision in the Veterans Health Care Facilities Capital Improvement Act of 2011 to rename the local VAMC after George H. O'Brien Jr. passed the House of Representatives overwhelmingly.
The vote, to rename the facility the George H. O'Brien Jr. Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, was 412-3 in favor of the measure.
A 76-year-old Big Spring man indicted in November 2009 for possession of child pornography was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison this week in an Abilene federal court.
Harvey James Pelland — who was convicted in March of two counts of possessing child pornography and five counts of receiving a visual depiction of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct — was sentenced to serve 151 months in prison to be followed by 10 years of probation.
The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Jorge A. Solis.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• JOEY EUGENE MATA, 23, of 1 Courtney Place Apt. 402, was arrested Thursday on a charge of forging/altering prescription.
• BEN TORRES GONZALES, 41, of 1200 S. Nolan, was arrested Thursday on a warrant for criminal mischief.
• JON COLE MCLEOD, 21, of 618 Tulane, was arrested Thursday on warrants for Consumption of alcohol by a minor (two counts).
• JAMEY SCOTT JOHNSON, 48, transient, was arrested Friday on a charge of disorderly conduct – noise.
