The Big Spring City Council approved first reading of the proposed 2011-2012 budget Tuesday night on a 6-1 vote, as the municipality looks to finalize its fiscal plan for the coming year.
District 1 Councilman Marcus Fernandez cast the lone vote against the proposed budget, while District 2 Councilman Manuel Ramirez Jr., District 3 Councilman Glen Carrigan, Mayor Tommy Duncan, District 4 Councilwoman Gloria McDonald, District 5 Councilman Craig Olson and District 6 Councilman Terry Hansen all gave the financial plan their approval.
For 30 years, Big Spring Symphony Orchestra has been bringing something special to Big Spring and this year is no different.
Dr. Keith Graumann, third and current conductor of the symphony, will be celebrating his 10th year and the symphony itself will be celebrating its 30th anniversary. The season will kick off at 8 p.m. Saturday with a Latin celebration at First Baptist Church, located at 705 W. FM 700.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• PRISMA JESSICA VIERA, 25, of 1900 Martin Luther King Blvd. Apt. 407, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of abandoning/endangering a child with intent to return.
• AARON COMPTON, 21, of Garden City, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.
• MARCUS LAMON COLE, 24, of 1102 S. Lancaster, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of tampering/fabricating physical evidence.
Mildred Murphy, 96, of Big Spring passed away Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel with the Rev. Herb McPherson and Dr. Randy Cotton officiating. Burial will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
John C. Borchardt Jr., 65, of Big Spring died Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, 2011, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.
Gregg Robert McAteer was born April 13, 1963, in Billings, Mont. and passed away in a Houston hospital Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, at the age of 48 years. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011, at the Schmidt Funeral Home Chapel in Katy. A funeral service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011, at Grace Fellowship United Methodist Church in Katy with the Rev. Jim Leggett officiating.
Richard Eugene Johnson, 73, of Holly Lake Ranch, Texas, died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011, in Fort Worth, Texas. A memorial service will be held at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, with a 9 a.m. Rosary and a 9:30 a.m. mass. Verlene Atkinson, 78, of Big Spring died Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011, in a local hospital. Her services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
In the Big Spring Country Club championship tournament, the first flight was dominated by Blake Brorman. His combined 218 score for three rounds was three strokes ahead of Justin Myers. Tawleigh McCullough finished in third place in the flight, shooting a 223.
In the second flight, Brian Heidelberg and R. C. Reed both finished the day with a 235. Reed came from behind to tie in the second round, shooting a 79 to force the tie. Heidelberg eventually won the flight, with Byron Harris coming in third place with a 237.
