Big Spring Independent School District officials have received federal approval of its new single-member district maps.
BSISD Business Manager Debbie Green said the district recently received a “notice of no objection” to its redistricting plan from the U.S. Department of Justice, meaning the new boundaries will take effect in time for the 2012 trustee elections.
Population and demographic shifts forced the school district to make changes to its single-member districts. Since the 2000 Census, that all-important demographic makeup has changed well beyond federally approved limits.
Officials with the Howard County Sheriff's Office say area residents should remain vigilant as they investigate reports of a possible phone scam where callers are identifying themselves as county employees.
According to Sheriff Stan Parker, the calls have come from a number identified as “private” by caller identification services.
