Coming soon to a ballot box near you: Brown vs. Torres

When the Democratic primary polls open in April, longtime incumbent Howard County Precinct 1 Commissioner Emma Brown will take on challenger Larry Torres for the Democratic nomination to represent the seat on the ballot in November.

Assuming a Republican challenger doesn't file before the primaries, the fate of the seat could be decided in April, as the winner of the election would go unopposed in November.

VA renaming slated Jan. 18

VA Medical Center officials have finalized plans to rename the facility after Big Spring's lone Medal of Honor recipient.

The hospital will be officially renamed the George H. O'Brien Jr. VA Medical Center during ceremonies scheduled for Jan. 18, said Iva Jo Hanslik, community relations director for the VAMC.

Legislation to rename the center after George H. O'Brien Jr. passed Congress earlier this year and was signed into law by President Obama in October, and local officials had planned to officially rename the facility on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• JEREMY JOHN MILLER, 34, of 1425 E. Sixth St. Apt. 2, was arrested Friday on two warrants from other agencies and a charge of operating motor vehicle with wrong registration.
• JOHN MICHAEL WILKINSON, 26, of 2304 E. FM 700, was arrested Friday on two warrants from other agencies.
• DAVID C. GANDARA, 33, of 805 W. Seventh St., was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication.

Oliver Cofer Jr.

Oliver Cofer Jr., 87, passed away Friday, Dec. 23, 2011, in Fort Worth, Texas. He had resided in Big Spring from 1948 to 2001.

Oliver was born Oct. 7, 1924, to Janie and Oliver Cofer Sr. in Grand Saline, Texas. He graduated from Grand Saline High School in 1942. He studied journalism at North Texas State University in Denton.

Troy Brown

Troy Brown, 82, of Hale Center died Dec. 25, 2011, in Lubbock. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Hale Center with the Rev. Carrol Green officiating. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Plainview.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Troy was born Jan. 3, 1929, to Bayles and Bevie Brown in Lorraine, Texas. He married Mildred Houchin Aug. 15, 1947, in Ackerly, Texas.

Ronnie Wales

Ronnie Wales, 66, of Big Spring died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011, in a local hospital. Private funeral services will be held at a later date.

Ronnie was born Feb. 3, 1945, in Oklahoma, an American Indian of the Choctaw Nation. He served his country in the United States Army and was a truck driver for most of his life. He married Betty Boykin on Feb. 5, 1983, in Las Vegas, Nev.

In addition to his wife, Ronnie is survived by a step daughter, Valerie Johnson of Benton, La.

A time of good cheer, but also to beware

Santa won’t be the only one making a list and checking it twice this season, as local law enforcement officials warn residents to be extra-vigilant against burglars and other criminals looking to cash in on the holiday.

According to officials with the Big Spring Police Department, the number of reports of burglary of a habitation increase during the holiday season, as criminals look to fill their stockings with other people’s gifts.

St. Nick to visit Festival of Lights gift shop tonight

There is one last chance to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Santa will be at the Comanche Trail Festival of Lights Gift Shop tonight from 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. before he heads back to the North Pole.

The Big Spring Symphony Guild has teamed up with the Festival of Lights to provide items for the gift shop. Symphony Guild will offer ornaments, aprons and Nutcracker shirts. The Festival of Lights is selling poinsettia shirts, ornaments and light pins.

Schooler Photography will be on hand for those wanting to get photos with Santa. There is no charge for visiting with Santa.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• REBECCA NICOLE RODRIQUEZ, 25, of 1405 Settles, was arrested Thursday on charges of failure to identify – giving false information, dog or cat running at large and a warrant from another agency.
• THEFT was reported:
In the 100 block of N. First Street in Coahoma.
In the 700 block of W. Interstate Highway 20.
• ASSAULT was reported in the 2500 block of Wasson Road.

Barbara Ann Hull

Barbara Ann Hull, 63, of Big Spring died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Chapel with the Rev. Derrick Looney officiating. Burial will be at Trinity Memorial Park.
