rea residents looking to celebrate the Christmas and New Year holidays this year will have to do so without the help of “rockets' red glare,” as Howard County commissioners approved a ban on rockets and other finned fireworks Monday.
Commissioners voted unanimously — with Precinct 2 Commissioner Donnie Baker making the motion, which received a second from Precinct 4 Commissioner John Cline — in favor of the ban in hopes of staving off what County Judge Mark Barr said has become an unfortunate tradition in the county.
The Texas Legislature may not be in session, but that doesn't mean state representatives don't have work to do.
Kel Seliger, Big Spring's representative in the Texas Senate, was in town Tuesday to discuss a variety of issues — including education finance and water — with the local Young Republicans organization.
Sen. Seliger (R-Amarillo), said how the state finances schools in the future will be perhaps the most critical issue facing the legislature when it reconvenes in 2013.

â€˘ ARTURO VASQUEZ, 42, of 907 N. Main St., was arrested Monday on a charge of driving while license suspended or invalid with a previous conviction.
â€˘ CHRISTOPHER FITZGERAL CARVER, 47, of Abilene, was arrested Monday on a warrant from another agency.
â€˘ LARRY JOHNATHAN LEE, 45, of 7400 S. Service Rd., was arrested Monday on warrants for failure to appear (two counts), driving while license invalid and failure to yield the right-of-way at stop intersection.
Curtis Linden "Nick" Nichols, 64, of Etowah, Tenn., died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011, at home after a long battle with cancer.
He was born Sept. 14, 1947, in Etowah. He was stationed at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, Texas, during the Vietnam War and lived there until 1990. He then returned to Etowah, where he worked for Bumper to Bumper Auto Parts and later retired from Napa Auto Parts in Athens, Tenn.
Martha Grant, 86, of Big Spring, formerly of Fort Worth died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Private family memorial services will be held at a later date at D.F.W. National Cemetery.
She was born May 31, 1925, in Forth Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, to Ella (McCaskill) Lusk and John Franklin Lusk. She married Forrest Grey Grant Jr. on May 16, 1947. He preceded her in death Dec. 7, 1997.
TULIA â€” Elida â€śLillieâ€ť Granado, 76, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, in Amarillo. A funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, in the Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit with the Rev. Marcos Gonzales officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery under the care of Kornerstone Funeral Directors of Tulia. A rosary service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011, at the funeral home.
Ramona M. Tijerina, 62, of Big Spring died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011, at Hospice Inpatient Unit of Midland. Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, at Myers & Smith Chapel with the Rev. Doug Shelley and the Rev. Jeff Davison officiating. Burial will follow at Coahoma Cemetery.
Jackie Faye Bowden, 78, of Big Spring died Monday, Dec. 12, 2011, in a local nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011, at the funeral home.
Jackie was born Oct. 5, 1933, in Lubbock, Texas, to Tom and Opal Williams. She married Horace Bowden on Feb. 24, 1956. She was a housewife, mother, grandmother and a member of Midway Baptist Church.
Don W. Williams, 67, of Big Spring died Monday, Dec. 12, 2011, in a Lubbock hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. David Robertson and the Rev. Bill Ivins officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011, at the funeral home.
He was born Jan. 15, 1944, in Loraine, Texas, and married Elizabeth Pickett on March 11, 1967, in Stanton, Texas.
Leeon Pettitt, 77, of Big Spring died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011, near Albuquerque, N.M. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
