The Big Spring VA Medical Center officially became the George H. O’Brien VA Medical Center Wednesday, as dignitaries, veterans and others gathered to pay tribute to a man who was praised as a husband, father, grandfather, friend, patriot and an American hero.
O’Brien, who died in 2005 at the age of 78, is the only Big Spring resident to receive the Medal of Honor, the most prestigious award that can be bestowed on a U.S. serviceman, according to Daniel Marsh, medical center director.
A 4-year-old child was air-lifted to University Medical Center in Lubbock this morning following a rollover accident on Interstate Highway 20 near the 174 mile marker.
The accident was reported shortly after 8 a.m. when emergency responders were dispatched to a location on the north service road near Interstate Highway 20 across from the Big Spring Department of Public Safety Office.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
â˘ BECKY ANN ZUBIATE, 28, of 1905 Wasson Rd. 45, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant for assault: causes bodily injury.
â˘ LARRY YBARRA, 42, of 1506 Wood St., was arrested Wednesday on a warrant for driving while license suspended/invalid previous conviction.
â˘CRIMINAL MISCHIEF was reported in the 5100 block of E. FM 846.
â˘ THEFT was reported:
In the 200 block of W. Third Street.
In the 500 block of Highland Drive.
Beverly Ann Shockley, 71, of Plano, formerly of Big Spring, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, in a Carollton nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 20, 2012, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012, at the funeral home.
She was born March 10, 1940, in Big Spring, Texas.
ABILENE â Robert H. Thomas Sr. died Monday, Jan. 16, 2012, at Hendrick Medical Center. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012, at the Clyde Assembly of God with John Shepard officiating and Charles Sinks assisting. Burial will follow in the Rochester Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Howard Funeral Home.
Gloria Lopez Molina, age 66, passed away Jan. 10, 2012, in Dallas, Texas.
Gloria is survived by her children, Louis, Ines, Adela, Emilio, Senaida, Fidel; her long-time companion, Rene; two sisters, Rosa L. Alvarez and Margarita Pacheco and her husband Jimmy of Big Spring, Texas; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Primera Iglesia Bautista, 701 NW 5th St., Big Spring, Texas.
Glen Paul Petree, 70, of Midland, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, in a Houston hospital. His services are pending with Gilbreath Funeral Home of Stanton.
