Steers fall to No. 2 Wylie

It didn't come easy, but No. 2 ranked Abilene Wylie earned a 4-3A District-opening victory over Big Spring on Friday at Memorial Stadium.
After falling behind 21-0 in the first quarter, the Steers rallied back outscoring the Bulldogs 24-21 for the remainder of the game, but the early deficit was too much to overcome and Wylie handed BSHS its first loss of the season, outscoring the Steers 42-24.

Forsan up, Coahoma down in district openers

HASKELL — After losing two straight games against perennial playoff squads Crane and Sundown, the Forsan Buffaloes edged the Haskell Indians 14-7 on the road to open District 4-1A action with a win and improving their record to 5-2 on the season.

Haskell scored early on a touchdown pass to Warren Flye from quarterback Brett Shelton.

Senior running back Brendan Roman returned after being sidelined with a rib injury and racked up 127 yards on the ground and scored a Forsan touchdown in the first quarter of play.

Robbery investigation ongoing

Law enforcement officials say the investigation into a recent robbery at the local Chicken Express restaurant is still ongoing, with interviews with witnesses still under way.

Officers were dispatched to the local eatery Oct. 1 after a masked suspect attacked an employee and made away with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to police reports.

“We're still in the process of interviewing possible witnesses,” Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer for the Big Spring Police Department, said. “The case is moving ahead slowly, but it is moving ahead.”

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. today:
• JOHN MANUEL SOLIS, 26, of 1905 Wasson Rd. Apt. 24, was arrested Friday on a warrant for possession of drug paraphernalia.
• PAUL EUGENE CLINE, 38, of 200 Lockhart St., was arrested Friday on a warrant from another agency.
• NICHOLAS DEWAYNE HOWELL, 19, of Odessa, was arrested Friday on a charge of no driver's license – when unlicensed.
• JUAN JOSE OLIVAREZ, 29, of 104 Lockhart, was arrested Friday on warrants for no driver's license – when unlicensed and failure to appear.

Give a Christmas gift for our troops

Area residents will have a chance to give U.S. military personnel stationed overseas a bit of holiday cheer again this year.

Beginning Monday, Adopt a Military Hero: Howard County's Christmas for Our Troops will collect donations and gifts to send to military personnel who will spend the holiday season far away from home.

For the past few years, the effort has been done under the auspices of the Midland-based Christmas for Our Troops, but local organizer Debbie Burrow said she wanted to do something a little different this year.

Clovis Bodine

Clovis Bodine, 94, of Ackerly, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Oct. 11, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, at the First Baptist Church of Ackerly with Dr. Stan Blevins and Derrick Looney officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.

Robert L. Crain

Robert L. Crain, 79, of Big Spring died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, at Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez State Veterans Home. Private memorial services will be at a later date.

He was born Aug. 10, 1933, in Buleadean, N.C. He grew up in Mars Hill, N.C. He retired from the Air Force after 24 years and was a Vietnam veteran. He lived in Big Spring for two years, coming from Del Rio. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
