Ramon Florez was born in Big Spring, Texas, to Felix and Jesusita Florez. A longtime resident of Atwater, he passed away Oct. 14, 2012, in Tucson, Ariz., at the age of 89.
He was a retired lead janitor for Merced County, a World War II veteran and member of Crusillista de Cristiandad of St. Anthonyâ€™s Church in Atwater.
He is survived by his children, Aurora Florez, Rita Florez, Cruz (Phillip) Sanchez, Lucy (Frank) Perez, Felix (Simona) Florez, and Ruben (Mary) Florez; and 14 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Bessie Ruth Green, 96, of Lenorah, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, at Manor Park in Midland. Memorial services were tol be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church in Stanton with the Rev. Monte Kreis, officiating.
The family will received friends Friday, Oct.26, 2012, at Gilbreath Funeral Home.
Ruth was born in Roxton, Texas, Sept. 26, 1916, to Wincie H. and Daisy Lillian Dale Maness. She graduated from Wellman High School. She married Odee Green on April 25, 1936 in Brownfield. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Stanton.
Richard Paul Fleckenstein, 83, of Big Spring, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. At his request, there will be no services, as he has donated his body to the Texas Tech University Willed Body Program in Lubbock, Texas.
The ability to stay warm when the mercury falls is something most Crossroads residents take for granted, but according to officials with the Big Spring Salvation Army, there are many within the community who struggle when the weather turns cold.
Bessie Flores, social worker for the local Salvation Army, said the weather â€” from the heat of summer to the freezing winters â€” poses a very real problem for many low-income residents, a problem that can turn deadly.

Howard College will have the Halloween spirit this year as it hosts trick or treaters on the HC Big Spring campus and a haunted house on the SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf campus.

â€˘ CHERYL ANN WILLIAMS, 53, of 9604 Gail Highway, was arrested Wednesday on charges of public intoxication and abandonment/endangerment of a child â€“ criminal negligence.
â€˘ MICHAEL EVERET BARNETT, 24, of 207 Moore Rd., was arrested Wednesday on a warrant from another agency.
â€˘ THOMAS ROY WHITE, 21, of 400 N.W. Broadway in Coahoma, was arrested Wednesday on charges of theft of aluminum/bronze/copper/brass, failure to maintain financial responsibility and disregarding a stop sign.
Carolyn H. Hanson, 81, of Big Spring died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at her residence, surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Dudley Mullins officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at the funeral home.
She was born Nov. 28, 1930, in Howard County and married Bill Hanson Aug. 26, 1950, in Odessa. He preceded her in death March 26, 2002.
Lucio Montemayor Vasquez, 41, of Big Spring, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at his residence. A viewing will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.
He was born Oct. 26, 1970, in Colorado City, Texas, and married Dora Cervantes Sept. 27, 2010. in Big Spring.
Lucio grew up in Colorado City and graduated from Colorado City High School. After graduation he joined the United States Army and served in Korea. Lucio worked at various jobs and was a master of all trades. He moved to Big Spring in 2001.
