City, Atmos agree to deal

The city of Big Spring — led by a group of West Texas cities working together — has finally reached an agreement with Atmos Energy regarding the company's requested rate increase, an agreement that should keep local customer's gas bill at the same rate as previous years.

The city, along with the steering committee representing many cities in Atmos Energy's West Texas Division, began negotiations earlier this year when the company requested a rate increase, according to City Finance Director Peggy Walker.

Woodcarvers' show and sale starts Monday

To most of us, a block of wood pretty much looks like a block of wood. To a woodcarver, however, it's a canvas.

Members of the Mustang Draw Woodcarver's Club will both display their works of art and teach you a thing or two about their craft when their annual Show and Sale begins Monday at the Dora Roberts Community Center.

As part of the annual exhibition, club members will hold classes from Monday to Thursday on various forms of woodcarving, ranging from beginner's work to more advanced art.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• DAVID ANTHONY JUAREZ, 25, of 2502 Cheyenne, was arrested Wednesday on warrants for failure to appear (five counts), driving while license invalid (two counts), failure to maintain financial responsibility, expired registration, no driver's license – when unlicensed, expired motor vehicle inspection, juvenile curfew violation, possession of alcohol by a minor and failure to use child safety seat.

Education top focus of town hall meeting

The future of higher education in the Lone Star State topped the agenda Tuesday during a town hall meeting held by District 31 State Senator Kel Seliger, who said more funding may not equal a cure for recent cuts in education spending.

Seliger — who was recently named the chairman of the state Higher Education Committee — said the upcoming legislative session set for 2013 should be an interesting one.

BSISD to seek class size waiver

Big Spring Independent School district officials are asking for a do-over, at least where state-mandated student-teacher ratios are concerned.

BSISD trustees will are expected to seek a waiver of the ratio requirement when they hold their regular monthly meeting at 5:15 p.m. Thursday in the high school board room.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• JACOB DANIEL PETROWSKI, 23, of 2803 Apache Dr., was arrested Tuesday on a charge of possession of marijuana – two ounces or less.
• PAULA JOLLEY BUTLER, 43, of 1606 E. Sixth St., was arrested Tuesday on warrants for failure to maintain financial responsibility and failure to appear.

Edna M. Hughes

Edna M. Hughes, 78, of Big Spring died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012, in a Midland hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Pastor Billy Guy officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at the funeral home.

She was born Jan. 15, 1934, in Graham, Texas, and married Glen Hughes on Nov. 28, 1968, in El Paso, Texas.

Michael Oscar Yanez

Michael Oscar Yanez, 39, of Big Spring died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.

A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.

He was born Dec. 15, 1972, in Big Spring, Texas, and married Terry Miears on July 4, 1995, in Big Spring.

Charles Roy 'Chuck' Campanella

Charles Roy “Chuck” Campanella was born Nov. 23, 1943, in Midland, Texas. He passed away Oct. 4, 2012, at his home in Big Spring, Texas.

He is preceded in his death by both of his parents, Charles Peter and Mary Campanella of Midland, Texas; his maternal grandparents, Wallace and Eva Roy of Midland, Texas; and paternal grandparents, Liborio and Sebastiana Campanella, of Boston, Mass.
