Lyte, others indicted

A Howard County grand jury handed down indictments on more than 30 people during their session Thursday, including several charges of aggravated sexual abuse of a child and indecency with a child against a Big Spring man who met his victim while serving as youth minister for a local church.

Time running out to enter Christmas parade

Excuse the pun, but it's almost time for the Big Spring Herald to, well, herald in the Christmas season.

Plans are being finalized for the 25th annual Herald Community Christmas parade, which will be held Dec. 1, and officials said there's still plenty of room for entries.

Deadline to enter your organization in the parade is Friday, said Herald Advertising Director Rick Nunez.

The theme for the this year is “A Storybook Christmas.”

The parade, which first wound its way down Gregg Street in 1986, will again be a lighted parade.

Bond prep on Forsan ISD board agenda

FORSAN — School officials here will continue to lay the groundwork for a bond election when they hold their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the administration wing board room.

Forsan Independent School District officials have made no secret of their intent to call for a bond election sometime in 2013. If voters approve the bond, a new elementary school will be constructed with the proceeds.

Brenda Mercer

Brenda Mercer, 68, Midland, passed away Nov. 8, 2012, in Midland after a short battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, at 3 p.m. at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home Chapel in Midland. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Velma R. Wood

November 10, 2012

Velma R. (Nurse) Wood, 86, of Coahoma, Texas, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, 2012, at the First Baptist Church of Coahoma. Interment will follow at Coahoma Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

She was born Sept. 23, 1926, in Coahoma, Texas and married Roney Lathan Wood May 26, 1946, in Coahoma, Texas. He preceded her in death Oct. 27, 1989.

Nena Grenon

November 10, 2012

Nena Grenon, 81, of Big Spring, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012, at Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with burial at Trinity Memorial Park.

Several Veteran's Day activities planned

The Crossroads area looks to offer a heartfelt thanks to local veterans today and this weekend with a number of ceremonies and offerings.

This morning, the Big Spring VA Medical Center was slated to present its Community-Wide Veterans Day Program at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum, which included a luncheon following the presentation.

For BSISD, 'unacceptable' is unacceptable

It's doubtful anyone is more anxious for Big Spring Independent School District to emerge from the cloud of its “academically unacceptable” rating than school officials themselves.

BSISD earned that odious rating in the last round of Texas Education Agency ratings two years ago and school officials are eager to rid the district of the tag.

“No one likes to be considered unacceptable, and we're going to do everything we can to get out from under that,” Superintendent Steven Saldivar told school trustees during their monthly meeting Thursday night.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• OSCAR ORTIZ, 23, of 1302 Madison, was arrested Thursday on charges of possession of marijuana – two ounces or less, possession of a controlled substance, driving while license invalid and failure to appear.
• CASMIRA VEGA, 20, of 1302 Madison, was arrested Thursday on charges of possession of marijuana – two ounces or less and possession of a controlled substance.

James King Bowers

James King Bowers, 58, of Big Spring passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2012. He was born Nov. 6, 1953, in Washington, D.C. to Charles and Patricia (King) Bowers. He served in the U.S. Army for 21 years before retiring.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary Cahoon; two sons, Elmer Bowers and wife Lacy of Buckeye, Ariz., and Zachary Bowers and wife Stephanie of Mesa, Ariz.,; seven grandchildren, Saretta, Desmond, Hannah, Logan, Ava, Aurora and Sasha Bowers.

Memorial services are scheduled at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at 1605 E. I-20 in Big Spring.
