Nena Grennon, 81, of Big Spring died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012, at Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

Area teams set to wrap up regular season

Big Spring:

Tonight marks the end of another season of West Texas high school football. For most of the Crossroads area teams, it means the final game of the season.

Big Spring, under the guidance of Coach Phillip Ritchey and promising sophomore quarterback Tobyn Tannehill, began the season with a shutout win and rolled to a 5-0 start.

The Steers opened district play with a loss, but played No. 2 ranked Abilene Wylie tough.

Veteran's Day ceremony Friday at coliseum

Veterans Day offers America an opportunity to honor Veterans for their service and sacrifice on behalf of our country. This year Big Spring and surrounding communities will host a very special Community-Wide Veterans Day Program at 11 a.m. Friday at Dorothy Garrett Coliseum, 1000 Birdwell Lane.

All Veterans and their families are invited to attend this program in their honor.

Following the program Veterans and their families are invited to lunch. As a gesture of appreciation to all Veterans, lunch has been provided by generous individuals from our community.

Empty Bowls fundraiser on tap

Don’t forget your tickets for the sixth annual Empty Bowl event.

United Way of Big Spring and Howard County is gearing up for the annual event, which will be held at Dora Roberts Community Center on Nov. 15 from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. The event was previously held in the First Christian Church fellowship hall.

Looking to dump your old computer?

Area residents with old DVD players, computers and other electronics will have the chance to help the environment soon, when Keep Big Spring Beautiful and the city of Big Spring team up for the annual e-waste collection day.

Collection is set to begin Friday, Nov. 16, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. for businesses or residents needing to do away with 10 or more computers or other electronic items. However, the collection will be open to everyone in the community Saturday. Nov. 17, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Both collections are being held at the Municipal Landfill, located at 4100 E. FM 700.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• DARRIN JAY CROOKS, 53, of 4200 Bilger, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.
• TIFFANY ANN ELDER, 30, of 2600 Langley, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.
• JOSEPH ANTHONY GUTIERREZ, 22, of 1707 State, was arrested Wednesday on warrants for public intoxication, possession of a controlled substance and prohibited substance in a correctional facility.

Voters reject change in EDC mandate

Residents of Big Spring voted convincingly in favor of keeping its existing Type A economic development corporation Tuesday night, as Proposition 1 was defeated with more than 60 percent of voters casting their ballots against the measure.

Proposition 1 — championed by Big Spring Mayor Tommy Duncan — asked voters to abolish the existing Type A Big Spring Economic Development Corporation, which is funded by a half-cent sales tax, in favor of a Type B agency. The measure received 3,257 ballots against (61.34 percent) and 2,053 votes in its favor (38.66 percent).

Big Spring ISD gets an 'A' on financial report card

Big Spring public school trustees will hear good news about the district's financial health when they hold their monthly meeting at 5:15 p.m. Thursday in the high school board room.

As it has every year since the program's inception, Big Spring Independent School District has received a “Superior Achievement” rating on Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) report compiled by the Texas Education Agency.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• TERRI LYNN YANEZ, 47, of 1105 Ridgeroad, was arrested Tuesday on two warrants from other agencies.
• LEONA JENE RADASA, 31, of 1413 Wood, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of public intoxication.
• ALBERTO REY GUTIERREZ, 29, of Dickinson, Texas, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
• DARRIN JAY CROOKS, 53, of 4200 Bilger, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.

Edwina Baggett Welch-Reagan

Edwina Baggett Welch-Reagan, 87, of Big Spring died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at the funeral home.
