Willie Williams

November 24, 2012

Willie Williams, 79, of Big Spring died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at his residence. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Baptist Temple with Pastor Rick Wilson officiating.

He was born Feb. 10, 1933, in Beckville, Texas to Dovie and Lester Williams. He served in the U. S. Air Force from 1952 until 1956, stationed at Webb Air Force Base. Willie worked at Cosden for 35 years, retiring in 1991. He was the crossing Guard at Goliad Middle School for many years.

Boyd Don Batla

Boyd Don Batla, 28, of San Antonio, formerly of Garden City, died Friday, November 23, 2012 San Antonio. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.

Wells Fargo, Howard College team up for Hawk Buddies

Hawk basketball is in full swing and for the ninth straight year, Howard College is teaming up with Wells Fargo to present the 2012-2013 Hawk Buddies Basketball Program.

Directed by HC Head Women's Basketball Coach Earl Diddle and Assistant Coach Addie Lees, the Hawk Buddies program has much to offer any budding hoops star.

BSHS volleyballers receive district honors

The 2012 Lady Steers volleyball team had a successful year.

BSHS wrapped up the season with a 26-14 overall record, went 7-3 in a competitive district and made it to the regional semifinal round of the playoffs before losing a five-set match against Lubbock Cooper.

Several Lady Steers were recognized this week with District 4-3A honors.

Senior Carson Reibe was named Defensive Specialist of the Year.

Erin Pollard claimed the Newcomer of the Year award.

Seniors Clara Benavides and Haley Dimidjian and junior Morgan Seaton all received First Team All-District nods.

Big Spring hoops teams win at home

November 21, 2012

Both Big Spring varsity basketball squads won last night at home.

The Lady Steers defeated Andrews 49-31 to improve to 3-2.

Yaneira Tuitt led BSHS with 18 points and five rebounds. Dyrshae Vanderbilt and sophomore Julianna Rodriguez each accounted for eight points as the the Lady Steers got back on the right side of the win column after back-to-back losses against Odessa High and Lamesa.

“It was a good non-district game,” Head Coach Mike Warren said. “It was good to get a win after losing the last two games.”

Containing Tuitt has been a priority for opposing teams.

Salvation Army gears for big holiday meal

For some Crossroads residents, a hot, home-cooked Thanksgiving meal is simply out of reach, both financially and physically. However, the Big Spring Area Salvation Army will be reaching out to those folks this week, as the local charity presents its annual holiday meal.

While the effort reaches out to low-income families, the hungry and others, it all begins with hard work from numerous volunteers.

Christmas: 'Tis the time for stealing

With Black Friday just days away, many Crossroads residents are gearing up for a day of shopping with friends and family. However, law abiding citizens won't be the only ones looking to check off names on their Christmas lists; law enforcement officials say it will likely be a busy day for criminals.

Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer with the Big Spring Police Department, said thieves will be out and about Friday — as well as the rest of the holiday season — just waiting to fill their stockings with ill-gotten gains.

The Howard County Sheriff's Office reported the following activity Monday (71 prisoners were reported at the county jail):
• BENNIE ANDRESS ROBINSON, 43, was jailed on a sentence for possession of marijuana.
• TRINITY RENEE TERRAZAS, 20, was jailed on a charge of issuance of a bad check.
• JAIME CRUZ, 45, was jailed on capias warrants charging expired driver's license, hindering an officer, disregarding a stop sign and violating promise to appear.
• ADELA PEREZ DEANDA, 44, was jailed on a charge of expired registration.

Inez Howell

Inez Howell, 94, of Big Spring, passed away Nov. 19, 2012, at Park View Nursing Home. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at Kiker-Seale Funeral Home in Colorado City with burial will follow in the Colorado City Cemetery.
