Historic hotel opening for guests after decades-long closure

For the second time in a century, the historic Settles Hotel will again open its arms to weary travelers tonight, as the downtown landmark marks its reopening with a special lighting ceremony.

With a public lighting ceremony slated for 7:30 p.m., the hotel — which is being operated by the La Corsha Hospitality Group — will see a rather unique set of visitors in the next couple of days, according to Publicity Specialist Ryann Collier.

VAMC in 2012: Change a constant

Change, it seems, was a constant at the local VA medical center in 2012, starting with its name.

In January, the hospital officially changed its name to the George H. O'Brien Jr. VA Medical Center — in honor of the Big Spring native who received the Medal of Honor during the Korean War — and it seemed something new was popping up at the facility all the time after that.

“It was the external event which kicked off a lot of change here,” said Jamie Park, executive assistant to the medical center director.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• JAMES ARTHUR WHITED, 47, of 309 W. Fifth St., was arrested Thursday on a charge of public intoxication.
• CURTIS THOMPSON, 53, of 500 S. Goliad, was arrested Thursday on charges of possession of a controlled substance (two counts), possession of marijuana – two ounces or less and tampering/fabricating physical evidence.
• THOMAS ALLEN YOUNG, 17, of 1425 E. Sixth St. Apt. 15, was arrested Thursday on a charge of possession of marijuana in a drug free zone – two ounces or less.

Augustine 'Telo' Cantu

Augustine “Telo” Cantu, 67, of Big Spring died Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. He will lie in state from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Vigil services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Deacon Johnny Arguello, officiating.

He was born March 27, 1945, in Ozona, Texas, to Victoria (Mendez) and Domingo Cantu. He lived most of his life in Howard County. He was a truck driver and had worked for Price Construction.

Rudy Hilario

Rudy Hilario, 52, of Big Spring died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock. Prayer services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Pastor Reynaldo Bennett officiating. Burial will be at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Joe Martin Doporto

Joe Martin Doporto, 55, of Big Spring died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, in Arlington, Texas. Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Msgr. Bernard L. Gully officiating. Burial will be at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
