Hawks fall to No. 1 South Plains

For 37 minutes, the Howard College men's basketball team were able to hold onto hopes of upsetting the top junior college team in the nation.

In the final three minutes, however, South Plains College showed how it had attained such a lofty ranking.

The top-ranked Texans survived an early Howard blitz, then dominated the closing minutes to take a 72-70 win over the Hawks at Garrett Coliseum Thursday night.

Yeats not only judge targeted by group

When 118th District Judge Timothy Yeats recently found out a complaint had been filed against him with the Texas Ethics Commission regarding alleged campaign finance violations committed during his 2010 bid for the bench, the freshman judge was surprised, to say the least.

What Yeats would later find out, however, was he wasn't alone.

Groundbreaking held for new law enforcement center

Family members of Troy M. Hogue — the fallen Texas Department of Public Safety trooper whose name has adorned the Big Spring Police Department's law enforcement center for many years now — broke ground on the joint law enforcement center that will bear his name Wednesday during an emotional ceremony.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• JACKIE DOYLE RICHEY, 49, of 700 E. 15th St., was arrested Wednesday on charges of failure to report injury accident at once, driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction, no driver's license – when unlicensed and failure to appear.
• MINDY CARROLL LOPER, 34, of 3806 Galveston in Snyder, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of theft – shoplifting.

Ruby Phillips

Ruby Phillips, 87, of Garland, formerly of Big Spring died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012, at Baylor Medical Center at Garland. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Friday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Westbrook Cemetery with the Rev. Joey Bacon officiating.

She was born July 12, 1924, in Mitchell County, Texas. She was a homemaker and had worked at Texas Instruments in Dallas. She had lived in Garland since 1965. She was a Baptist.

Neugebauer to visit local businesses

Projects are moving right along for the Big Spring Economic Development Corporation.

Thursday afternoon, Congressman Randy Neugebauer will be visiting the BSEDC, taking a tour of Desert Tanks — a recent venture supported by the BSEDC — and meeting with a couple of representatives with Transport Handling Specialists.

“Congressman Neugebauer wants to see what’s going on out there (at Desert Tanks),” Executive Director Terry Wegman said. “He is also interested in finding out more about the Big Spring Rail System and will be here for an hour to speak with two representatives from THS.”

BSHS trio bound for national meet

Three Big Spring High School Speech and Debate team members are Indianapolis bound this summer.

Shermila Kher and the team of Caleb Gonzales and Seth Trevino qualified for the National Forensic League National Tournament at the Tall Cotton District National Qualifying Tournament held this past weekend on the campuses of Howard College and Big Spring High School.

“This is my third time to qualify for Nationals,” Kher said, “and each time, I have qualified in a different event. I really want to do well with this year being my last.”

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• JUSTIN CHARLES MELTON, 23, of 1617 E. 17th St., was arrested Tuesday on warrants for failure to display driver's license and failure to appear (three counts).
• HENRY CLAY HERNANDEZ, 31, of 3222 Auburn, was arrested Tuesday on warrants for no driver's license – when unlicensed, failure to appear, speeding and driving when license invalid.
• CHRISTOPHER AARON SALAZAR, 24, of 1602 Sunset, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant for failure to appear.
