Breaking News update: Just released from BSPD officials. The remains discovered at the McMahon Wrinkle Airpark in Big Spring on Tuesday have been determined to be that of a male. At this time nothing else has been determined.
COAHOMA â€” School trustees here approved the calendar and teacher contracts for the 2012-2013 school year during their monthly meeting Thursday night.
The coming school year at Coahoma will begin Aug. 27 and conclude May 30, 2013, and includes the following student holidays:
â€˘ Sept. 3 â€” Labor Day holiday.
â€˘ Oct. 8 â€” Staff development (student holiday).
â€˘ Nov. 21-22 â€” Thanksgiving holiday.
â€˘ Nov. 26 â€” Staff development (student holiday).
â€˘ Dec. 20-Jan. 2, 2013 â€” Christmas holiday.
â€˘ March 11-15, 2013 â€” Spring break.
â€˘ May 24, 2013 â€” Bad weather make-up day.
New life, new hope and and a trip down memory lane is what Heritage Museum is offering with its Easter Greetings exhibit. The exhibit is open to the public until May 1 and is located in the museum lobby.
â€śEaster hasn't changed much. It is still focused around family for the most part and the traditions have pretty much stayed the same, but there are a few details that have transformed over the years,â€ť Museum Curator Tammy Schrecengost said.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
â€˘ JAMES DAIL RIERSON, 53, of 3302 W. Front St. in Midland, was arrested Thursday on a charge of public intoxication.
â€˘ LEONA JEAN RADASA, 30, of 1413 Wood, was arrested Thursday on charges of public intoxication and failure to identify.
â€˘ CALEB LEE HALLFORD, 18, of 10 Kenley Lane, was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency and a warrant for use or possession of illegal smoking paraphernalia.
Donna N. Smith, 86, of Midland passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2012. She was born in Duchesne, Utah, on March 27, 1925, to Alonzo C. and Fern (Gordon) Fitzwater. Donna had a passion for flowers and was a longtime member of the Green Thumb Garden Club.
Jerelene Bell, 89, of Big Spring died Sunday, March 18, 2012, at Parkview Nursing Home.
Jerelene was born Sept. 14, 1922, in Pittsburg, Texas, to Augusta Turner and Arthur Bell. She lived for a short time in Levelland before moving to Big Spring to be close to her brother. She was loved by many and loved playing Pitty Pat card game, collecting dolls and stuffed animals. She loved living life to the fullest and enjoyed many visitors. Jerelene was a feisty woman of small stature but she loved cats and staying active in her youth.
Eunice Fay Durkee passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at her home in New Boston, Texas. She was 68.
Eunice was born Sept. 10, 1943, in Big Spring, Texas, to Floyd and May Jones. She graduated high school in Ackerly, Texas, and attended college in New York state. She worked in the Howard County Courthouse as a stenographer for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and May Jones; a sister, Wanda Minex; and two brothers, Jimmy Jones and Gene Jones.
Patsy Evans, 82, of Big Spring died Thursday, March 22, 2012, at Hospice Unit of Midland Memorial. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday March 23, 2012, at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mount Olive Memorial Park with the Rev. Billy Bates officiating.
She was born Feb. 9, 1930, in Oilton, Okla., to Mabel and Maynard Mize. She married Milton C. Evans on July 5, 1953, in Caldwell, Kan. He preceded her in death Feb. 6, 1991.
When life as an athlete throws you a curveball, you have two options: take the strike, or hit it out of the park.
The latter tactic was chosen by Mai Gomez, a former Big Spring High School softball and volleyball player who suffered a series of ankle injuries which put her sports career on the sidelines, but opened up a new, potential career.
Gomez, a senior this year at BSHS, signed her letter of intent Thursday to attend Howard College on a full scholarship, majoring in what she knows best â€” sports medicine.
Jonnie Gunnels, 87, of Big Spring died Thursday, March 22, 2012, in a local nursing home. Her services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
