Deidra Whatley, 84, of Bandera, formerly of Big Spring died Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, at Bandera Rehabilitation and Health Center. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Myers & Smith Chapel with burial at Trinity Memorial Park.
Deidra was born July 10, 1927, at Texon, Texas, to Mildred and A.O. Vanderford. She was a resident of Big Spring since 1938, graduating from Big Spring High School in 1943 at the age of 15.
Born to a West Texas pioneer family in February of 1936, Mary Ann Baker peacefully left this world in the same month as her birth.
She was born Feb. 17, 1936, to Lanham Brown and Mary Lois Hodnett in Howard County. The elder sister to Guy Hodnett of Sand Springs and to the late Roger "Butch" Hodnett of Vincent, she attended school with them in Coahoma. There she met the love of her life and was later wed to Bobby Gene Baker, who still resides in Sand Springs.
Ruben David Thomas, 85, of Big Spring died Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, at Hospice House in Odessa. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
He was born Feb. 2, 1927, in Boyle County, Ky. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He owned a mowing and lawn service.
He is survived by three brothers, Don Thomas, Jimmy Thomas and Mike Thomas, all of Sweetwater; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Billy Gene Dykes, 84, of Big Spring died Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2012, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Elwin Collom officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
Billy was born Aug. 18, 1927, in Boswell, Okla. and married Sybil Kennedy. She preceded him in death Aug. 3, 2000. Billy served his country in both the United States Marine Corps and the United States Air Force. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion.
Judy Tucker, 56, of Midland County, formerly of Big Spring died Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at her residence. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
Victoria Escovedo, 71, of Big Spring died Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at Hospice of Midland Inpatient Unit. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
Local softball lovers will find themselves close to nirvana starting today.
Thirty teams from across West Texas, including the host Big Spring Lady Steers and the Forsan Lady Buffaloes, will converge on the Roy Anderson Complex for the three-day Tournament At The Crossroads, which runs through Saturday.
The Lady Steers (5-5) will open play in Pool C, along with Alpine, Jim Ned, Fort Stockton, Odessa Permian and Lubbock Estacado. Forsan will play in Pool B, which also includes Andrews, Midland Lee junior varsity, Levelland, Hawley and Odessa.
