Cassatt String Quartet coming to Odessa

The New York-based Cassatt String Quartet will perform its sixth annual mini-residency, entitled “Cassatt in the Basin,” Sunday through Saturday, May 5, designed to give area students the opportunity to study with artist-teachers and develop chamber music audiences of the future.

According to Lynda L.Ciolek, spokesperson for the Quartet, the program — sponsored by the Ector County Independent School District's Education Foundation — continues work begun by the Cassatt String Quartet in November 2007.

Grant gets county OK

Howard County commissioners gave the go-ahead Monday to accept a joint block grant that could help fund improvements for both the Howard County Sheriff's Office and Big Spring Police Department.

The funding — expected to total approximately $12,000 — is aimed at providing technical equipment for law enforcement agencies, according to Sheriff Stan Parker.

Area students qualify for state academic meet

Austin, here they come.

Several Crossroads area students will be heading to the University Interscholastic League state academic meet later this spring, thanks to strong showings at this past weekend's regional events.

Big Spring High School's Shermila Kher qualified for the state meet in two events, placing first in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and second in persuasive speaking during the Region I-3A academic meet at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

Kher will be joined in Austin by BSHS classmate Lacy McMurtrey, who finished second in literary criticism at the regional meet.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• KIRSTEN TASHAY LEWIS, 27, of 4102 Muir St., was arrested Monday on warrants for speeding in a school zone, failure to appear and criminal mischief – more than $50 and less than $500.
• MARIO ILDEFONSO SALAZAR, 22, of 1604 E. 11th Place, was arrested Monday on charges of public intoxication and assault causing bodily injury – family violence.

Jo Ann Avants passed away on April 20, 2012, in Fort Worth, Texas, at the age of 88. A service for relatives and friends will be held in the Fort Worth area at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home, Colleyvillle, Texas, on Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at 12:30 p.m., with family visitation that day from 8-1 a.m. Interment will be in Big Spring, Texas, with a graveside service for friends at Trinity Memorial Park cemetery on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at 2 p.m.
