Monday will be area residents' last chance to get free assistance with filing their tax returns from the annual AARP Tax Aid program, as the April 17 federal deadline to file forms quickly approaches.
According to program coordinator Ray Alexander, it has been a busy tax season for him and his team of volunteers, and with just days left to file federal returns, the last-minute rush will be on for many Crossroads residents.

Spurred by dominating showings from its speech and journalism teams, Big spring High School claimed the District 5-3A title at this week's University Interscholastic League Spring Academic Meet at the BSHS campus.
Big Spring totaled 456 points to edge Abilene Wylie (424.5 points), while Snyder (363 points) finished third. This is BSHS' first academic district crown since moving down to Class 3A in 2010.
LEGOs + robots = learning?
Elbow Elementary students are working — not playing (OK, maybe a little play) — with LEGOs and robots while gaining an insight into engineering.
For the first time, GT (gifted and talented) students in grades second through fifth at Elbow are taking part in the LEGO Robotics Challenge. Students traveled to the Texas Tech campus in Lubbock on March 24 to participate in a practice run and will return for actual competition April 21. There will be about 65 elementary teams competing.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• LAFAWN FAYE CANTU, 39, 507 W. Fourth St., was arrested Friday on charges of unauthorized use of motor vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia.
• PETER MANUEL CANDELARIA, 24, of 1600 S. Nolan St., was arrested Friday on a charge of theft between $50 and $500.
• EUGENE SCOTT, 62, of 1511 Tuscon Rd., was arrested Friday on charges of driving while license invalid and failure to appear.
Faye Jean (Miss Faye) McGee, 54, of Big Spring, died Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at her residence. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at Myers & Smith Chapel with Pastor Holston Banks and Minister Kathy McGee, officiating. Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. at Hamlin East Cemetery in Hamlin, Texas.
Nancy Arlene Reed, 61, of Stanton, formerly of Big Spring, died Friday, April 6, 2012, at Hospice of Midland Inpatient Unit. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

A charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child has been filed against the 54-year-old Big Spring man who was arrested in mid-March on charges of abandoning/endangering a child – criminal negligence and prohibited sexual conduct – incest, according to investigators.
These days, Memorial Stadium looks more a gravel pit than a place to play football, but all that will change in the coming weeks.
Workers are approaching the final stages of installing a $758,000 artificial playing surface at Memorial, along with other renovation projects at the stadium.
The field installation began earlier this year and is expected to be completed by late May, Assistant Superintendent Danny Ferrell said.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• ESTEVAN VALENCIA JR., 31, of 1110 E. 13th St., was arrested Thursday on a warrant for theft – more than $500 and less than $1,500.
• ERNEST WILLIAM CLARK, 71, transient, was arrested Thursday on a charge of criminal trespass.
• ADRIANNA BIANCA GARZA, 20, of 703 W. 18th St., was arrested Thursday on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol by a minor.
Vivian Thomas Etheredge, 90, of Big Spring died Thursday, April 5, 2012, at Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 2012, at Resthaven Cemetery in Midland, Texas, with the Rev. Doug Shelley officiating.
