Ruben Earl Steadmon, 87, of Big Spring, died Wednesday, April 18, 2012, in a local nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 23, 2012, at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park with the Rev. Joey Bacon, associate pastor at Trinity Baptist Church, officiating.
He was born July 19, 1924, near Knott, Texas, and married Jean Randell April 15, 1950 in Carlsbad, N.M. She preceded him in death Dec. 26, 2001.
A structure fire during the early morning hours today in the 600 block of N.W. Fifth Street claimed the life of an unidentified person. Law enforcement official are working to establish the cause of death and identity of the victim.
According to Big Spring Fire Marshall Carl Condray, the victim â€” believed to be an adult male â€” was discovered inside the home, located at 603 N.W. Fifth St., just minutes after firefighters arrived on the scene.
Put on your purple and head to Blankenship Field on Friday afternoon. Howard and Glasscock County Relay For Life 2012 will take place from 8 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday.
Registration will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Registered individuals will receive T-shirts and a $5 dinner coupon to be used at any of the team food vendors. The coupons are sponsored by the Hodnett Family in honor of Butch Hodnett.
Opening ceremonies will take place at 7:30 p.m. and the official first lap â€” the Survivors Lap â€” will take place at 8 p.m. A survivors reception will follow under the event tent.

â€˘ DAVID ALEGRIA, 27, of Corpus Christi, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
â€˘ FRANK FIERRO JR., 64, of 603 N.W. Fifth St., was arrested Wednesday on a charge of public intoxication.
â€˘ CHRISTINA FUENTES, 32, of 2518 Albrook Circle, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant from another agency.
â€˘ MATTHEW RODRIGUEZ, 19, of 410 S. Aylesford, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant for consumption of alcohol by a minor.
Edward â€śEddieâ€ť Rodriguez, 56, of Big Spring died Monday, April 16, 2012, at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Vigil services will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel. The family will receive friends from 7:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Msgr. Bernard L. Gully officiating. Burial will be at Coahoma Cemetery.
Dan Whitaker, 71, of Big Spring, died Wednesday, April 18, 2012, in a local hospital. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, April 20, 2012, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.
He was born Dec. 25, 1940, in Littlefield, Texas. He farmed and ranched in the Vincent Community until 1980, when he moved to Nashville, Tenn. He returned to Big Spring in 2007.

Amos Johnson, 82, of Big Spring, died Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
What wears red and black, leads the nation in home runs and can strike out three opposing batters in a row? If you are a fan of Howard College softball, you would know the answer is Olive Noatala.
Noatala, a sophomore at Howard College is leading the nation (yes, the nation), in National Junior College Athletic Association play with 26 dingers.
Three of them were hit Wednesday during a doubleheader at Foundation Field against Frank Phillips College. Noatala also produced nine RBIs on the day bringing her total for the season to 74 â€” also on the nationâ€™s leaderboard.
