Big Spring voters will get one last chance to weigh in on this year's municipal elections Saturday, as the fate of a proposed overhaul of the municipality's water and wastewater facilities using up to $13 million in economic development funds hangs in the balance.
With polls in the Big Spring municipal election set to open at the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., local election officials are hoping for a heavy turnout to make up for the lighter-than-expected balloting received during early voting.
Big Spring public school trustees have joined hundreds of their colleagues across Texas in protesting the emphasis state officials place on high stakes testing.
Thursday, the Big Spring Independent School District board of trustees unanimously approved a resolution calling upon state legislators to re-evaluate the place tests such as the TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) and STAAR (State of Texas Academic Assessment and Readiness) have in determining student success and college readiness.

â€¢ DAVONTE DASHUN ANDERSON, 19, of 1020 Ridgeroad, was arrested Wednesday on warrants for failure to maintain financial responsibility, no driver's license â€“ when unlicensed and failure to appear (two counts).
â€¢ KEVIN LAMONT WILLIAMS, 39, of Temple, Texas, was arrested Wednesday on warrants for possession of marijuana in a drug free zone â€“ two ounces or less and a warrant from another agency.
LD (Sonny) Jackson, 70, of Hillsboro died Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at his residence. Masonic graveside services will be held at noon Friday, May 11, 2012, at Ridge Park Cemetery in Hillsboro with John Milburn officiating. Visitation was from 9-11 a.m. Friday at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors in Hillsboro.
Don Cunningham, 71, of Big Spring, died Friday, May 11, 2012, at his residence. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
